Day 70: Today is Riley's 5th birthday! The boys, Craig and I, decorated the van last night, so he would wake up to a festive caravan.
The first words out of Riley's mouth this morning..."Morning. Is it my birthday?" We get straight into birthday mode with opening of the presents. Picture this: the five of us, in our pjs, sitting outside of a caravan, on the side of a road, watching a little boy open presents...only in Queensland!
After all the wild unwrapping, we pack up and head for Hervey Bay, just 270+kms south on the Bruce Hwy...we should be there for an early lunch.
Not likely! I forgot that Queenslands east coast is continually under roadworks. What should have been a nice pleasant drive, turns into a slow down, stop, speed up again four hours...most unpleasant!
That is followed by having to navigate through Hervey Bay's traffic, and make our way to our caravan park.
And if I wasn't knackered enough from the drive, the CP is a sight to believe! The roads are so narrow, you'd be lucky to park a bicycle, let alone a caravan.
Fortunately Craig has become the master of reversing a caravan, and after a lot of two-ing and fro-ing, he gets it in and we set up.
The day isn't fairing well in the weather arena either...cold, grey, cloudy...just plain miserable.
After our late lunch, we decide we might as well make the most of the day, and walk to the beach. The boys don their swimmers, which haven't seen the light of day since Kakadu.
Fortunately, kids don't care so much about the weather, and the afternoon was salvaged. Shells were gathered, waters were swum, and sand was dug and walked.
We have decided, with the weather as it is, not to go to Fraser Island. But we will stay another night, just to relax after two big days of driving.
Beautiful one day, perfect the next? Mmmmm...
