Day 60: It's a long, hot, windy drive along the Tablelands Highway. A single, crumbling lane, bordered on both sides by flat, treeless and grassless pastureland. How does anything survive out here?
But, we pass herds of cows gathered at the water troughs, chewing on what can only be their own cud.
These properties are harsh country and it's amazing to think some of the best beef is produced here. It is hard to explain the relentless nothingness. The absolute devastation of the land, the baroness.
The wind has been our enemy today, and when we finally arrive at the Barkly Highway Roadhouse, the 'empty' light has been on for the last 30kms!
We fill up, both fuel and lunch, and continue our drive towards the Queensland border. Time will determine where we stop today, and the kids.
As we approach the NT/QLD border, we see flashing lights and a road train, and we assume it is an accident. As we get closer we see heaps of police vehicles and several road trains, and about thirty police!
It's a blitz! But we are waved through...seems they're only checking road trains. Welcome to Queensland.
We make it to Cammoweal and after we pay a hefty $50 for a basic CP site, we set up.
And it's F.R.E.E.Z.I.N.G! We're still wandering around in our shorts and T-shirts, while everyone else is rugged up to the hilt.
The reality of home is bearing down upon us...
