Saturday 21
Saturday started early with a big breakfast from Till’s Parents. They are so generous and offering me so much food. I feel guilty but they insist on the food portions. Their house is absolutely amazing. It has high ceilings and big rooms. It’s odd that all the beds are on the floor without bed stands or frames. I decided to see the east side of Berlin on Saturday, so I walked down the street to the S-ban subway and rode it to the center of Berlin. The first sight I viewed was the tallest structure in Berlin, TV spire. There was a huge line (queue) to get into the spires plus the elevator costs 10 euros. I decided to skip it and walk around and see what else I could see. I ran into a beautiful preserved church and fountain. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name of the church. The interior was lined with little tine ceramic squares that made up murals. My next stop was the Berliner dome. This was an old church that is also used as a concert hall. I was unable to enter because of a concert was about to begin. I continued on my trek and arrived on to what the Germans refer to as Museum Island. There is an island in the middle of the city where the majority of the musems are located.
The first museum I entered was the Egyptian Museum. This one was by far my favorite because of all the artifacts they house. Apparently Germany is one of the 3 biggest areas that contains all the Egyptians artifacts that were inside the great pyramids and finds within Egypt. I couldn’t help but take so many pictures because I knew that grandpa would love to be here in Germany to see it. So many figures carved from stones. Sculptures and paintings of pharaohs and queens. The most famous one was the head piece of nyphrodite the queen of the Nile. My favorite pieces in the museum were the head piece and scripts written on papyrus. This museum housed also a page form Iliad written by homer. The page is the scene of Hectors Death. It is amazing that it has held up in that condition for such a long period of time.
The next museum I visit was the national art gallery of Berlin. In here they house famous paintings and sculptures from around the world. I am not a skilled artist or know much about art, but even I was impressed at the art housed inside of this gallery. I think I appreciate more sculptures more than paintings but I think it’s just my opinion. I loved the sculptures of the Greek mythology. I spent a good hour and half inside this museum. Afterwards I decided that I had been museum out and spent the majority of the afternoon shopping in the outside market that lined the streets in front of the museums. Didn’t find any rare find but it was still a nice distraction. I made my way west to the Brandenburg gate again and then to the Reich. There was such a huge queue that I decided not to proceed. I jumped out of line and headed back to Till’s parent’s house. Dinner was delicious breaded steak and pork that is famous German meal. Till was gone this weekend but his friends had invited me out that night to a university party put on by the student government. Nils and Phillip were very kind and I had a great hanging out with them.
