As we drive to the airport and catch our plane to Italy I have time to reflect on the American/Canadian leg of our trip.
We have been extremely busy and our feet and legs are exhausted. We have driven, stood in lines, walked, climbed and ridden. We have experienced natural wonders and man made ones both of which were equally amazing and picturesque. We had many late nights and slow mornings, adjusting our time clocks to fit the local culture.
What are my impressions of America and Canada: food is huge and cheap, a small glass of coke requires two hands to lift, 1 slice of pizza fills a dinner plate and when you order chips you get crisps!! Cities are huge, noisy and extremely busy. Everyone is in such a hurry and there is always the wail of an emergency vehicle somewhere. Theme parks are huge and crowded but extremely well organised. Natural wonders are huge and completely amazing.
Basically, America equals HUGE!! Everything is simply huge over here. Well structured, organised, amazing and HUGE!!
We didn't get to see a lot of America outside the cities apart from when driving to the Grand Canyon and to Canada but around Corning and Johnson City we were able to glimpse the America we see in films. Double storey, cladding houses with attic windows and cellar doors. All lined up along streets with window boxes, front porches with seats and picket fences. Letter boxes with flags for mail pick up and American flags flying outside many homes. It was great to see another side of this country apart from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas.
Overall, I loved this first leg of our trip. It was an assault on the senses and a flurry of activities. I think we will need time to flick through photos and reflect on what they tell us to really appreciate and remember everything we have experienced throughout the last 22 days. This scrapbooking album will take me 20 years to make!! Just as it should!! Farewell America and Canada for now. Time to create memories of a different style.....no theme parks in sight!!
Italy, here we come....Buongiorno!!
