First day in the Big Apple, headed off to Times Square to actually see the 'apple' which drops on New Years Eve....it's quite tiny really way up on the building roof!
Times Square is super busy, people everywhere, horns honking, massive billboards and building high electric signage. We brave the busy New Yorkers (everyone is in a serious rush around here...) and make our way to Madame Tussaud's...again, to see if there are different characters to meet and while many do repeat there are plenty of newbies as well. Talari luckily gets to put her arms around Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson again and Sienna has a pic with Prince William and Princess Kate. We stand on the red carpet with Johnny Depp and the girls wander along the yellow brick road with Dorothy herself. Talari again tries to take over the United States Presidency and the girls drive a yellow cab!!
From there we head to Ripley's Believe it or not. This is a very cool museum with the weird and wacky all in one place. I especially liked the medieval torture devices, why anyone would have broken the law is beyond me!! Those punishment tools are crazy scary and simply put, were meant to cause extreme pain or agonisingly slow death!! Very macabre but also completely fascinating. Talari was quite interested in the shrunken head displays. She was amazed at how they were preserved and grossed out at the same time. Probably trying to figure out a way to keep Prim for ever!!
We also go to a Lego exhibition titled, Art of the Brick. This show displayed art pieces all totally made from Lego bricks. There were reproductions of some masters such as the Mona Lisa, David and Starry Night as well as a range of sculptures and other works. It was really clever and again had the girls asking for more Lego bricks!! This led nicely into our visit to the huge Toys R Us store which has a Ferris wheel inside and a Barbie house you can enter. Somehow we managed to check out the store and leave again without spending any money. The girls had Lego on their minds and we convinced them that we can get that back home, it certainly isn't something we want to be lugging from place to place.
Our next stop is to climb the Rockefeller Centre to look out over New York. The view was amazing and showed us just how huge this city is. To end our day we wandered around Grand Central Station which has its own food court!! This city is noisy, crowded, rushed and somehow quite intoxicating all rolled into one. Navigation is easy though, blocks are mostly rectangular and streets are numerically named!! Even I can figure out that if our accommodation is on West 36th street, it comes between West 35th and West 37th!!! Today was an interesting, fun day and I've decided that I quite like New York, well to visit anyway!!
