Our appetite wetted we decided to continue north leading us to Chiclayo.A major coastal town and the centre of the Lambayeque archeological sites of Sipan and Tucume. We decided to explore these sites independently in the view to delve deeper into the fascinating history of this once rich land.
A shared taxi ride (known as a combi) took us to Lambayeque, where the Museum of Sipan is located. A deeply interesting museum containing artifacts and human remains from the empire of the Lord of Sipan. Entertainined by mechanically moving lifesize models of the Lord of Sipan and his followers. We then made our way to the site of Sipan. A guide in hand we learnt much about the exciting buried treasures, grave robbers and police involvement over the looted tombs. The lords of this culture were ornately buried, believing that they would continue to survive in the afterlife, their conclusion being the sacrifice of his wife, concubine, a child, a warrior, a dog, a llama and keeper of the tomb. It was deemed as the ultimate honour to be buried with the lord.
Strangley we came across the carob tree which the tour guide explained is known as Algorrobina commonly used as a natural sweetner.
We also visited Tucume which is a little known site. There are 28 pyramids in this area, all crumbling, although there was no english speaking guide, we managed to navigate our way around the site. A very hot day and a very steep climb to the top of one of these pyramids known as purgatory walk.....altitude nausea, Dal remained 3/4 of the way up while Maz scaled the last steep incline, where she was awarded with a 360 deg view.
The Mercado Modela is known for its witch doctor stalls. Curiosity led us to the door of a Shaman, where we felt incredibly uncomfortable when he started to fiddle with the shutters and legged it!!!
