Huaraz is a little town nestled in the Cordilla Blanca region, surrounded by spectacular snow capped mountains. Needless to say it gets very very cold! Our accommodation was basic with none of the comforts of central heating, even a hot water bottle would have done! We toasted our hands on steaming hot bowls of soup! Absolutely delicious!! We almost felt like we were back at home :) a huge difference to the hot weather we have gotten used to.
This region is known for its adventurous trekking trails and mountain climbs accompanied by some of the most stunning scenery....with it being the rainy season we solely decided to visit Chavin De Huantar, which was our original reason for travelling to this remote area.
Chavin De Huantar is a pre-inca ruin that was once the epicentre of worship. Through the centuries differing religions have absorbed their predecessors cultural ways of worship, so attracting thousands of followers. To accommodate this influx, a new ceremonial ground was built. Unfortunately much of this area was destroyed by earthquakes, however recent excavation has led to the discovery of underground passageways, textiles, ceramics and human bones. A very educational visit voicing opinions of spanish conquerers depicting this temple as that of devil worship due to human sacrifices made in the belief that mother earth would reward them.
We inhabited a few smoothie places as well as sampling our first chai tea in Peru! Food was extremely flavoursome, with use of chillies and other local herbs.
