An overnight dirt road bus journey through mountainous terrain took us to this historical city.
Sucre is where the declaration of indepedence was signed on August 6th, 1825. An informative guided tour around the Casa de Libertad taught us the history of this fascinating country which was named after its liberator, Simon Bolivar, later to be called Bolivia. We visited the room where the declaration of independance was signed which contained several giant portraits of important historical figures and a hall dedicated to past Presidents, very interesting.
Sucre is also well know for its exquisite Parati Chocolates (better than Cadburys or Belgian!) which we devoured numerous occasions during our stay there :)
A vist to Castle de Gloria left us feeling a little dissapointed as it was under construction so our exploration of this historical building was limited to the outside. Nontheless it was still quite impressive with its extensive gardens and Arabic like architecture. No guide was available at the time of our visit to inform us about the history but from what we gathered it was owned by a VERY rich family!
There were lots of Artesenal stores selling high quality Llama products and of course, chocolates!! The main plaza was one of the greenest we have seen in Bolivia.
A steep climb up the valley to a Mirador (lookout) allowed us an overview of the city, lots of white buildings with red rooftops and church spires nestled by the surrounding mountains.
From here we will make our way onto Uyuni via a mining town, Potosi.
