We traveled ´The Death Road ´ (because it sees the most fatalities annually) North from La Paz to a small town of Coroico. We journeyed through the rough mountainous terrain through the low lying clouds, where upon they lifted and afforded us with the most stunning waterfalls and terrain. Roy, a very humorous character joined us on our adventures north. He left us highly entertained and amused during the length of our stay! We were inspired by his attitude, ethics, energy and positivity. One of the most thought provoking individuals we have met on our travels. Coroico is not a pretty a town, it was founded at a very high 2548m, oxygen low, but as you start your ascent you take in the beauty of the surrounding landscape of the Yungas region. The area is particularly know for its coffee plantations, coca plantations, fruits and settlement of afrobolivians ( which is very rare in Bolivia)Maz celebrated her 27th Birthday at this quaint little town over a beer and Mexican, with great conversation and stunning sights over into the mountains of the region. The following day we decided to explore the region with conviction…… very very steep roads, left us breathless at a very high altitude. We crawled our way to the top, affording us with even more dramatic views. Under the intense beauty we walked 1 ½ hours to our first waterfall where we stood transfixed by its sheer magnitude. We managed to secure a 4x4 for the following day allowing us to explore the following three waterfalls, the river, coca fields, coco fields and many many more. Coca is freely grown in regions of Bolivia, the people chew the leaves continuously as the properties are known to increase oxygen flow in high altitudes and a suppression of pain affording more productivity of people in the fields. A day of horse riding, was very entertaining and educational, touring the region for 3 hours on horse back in the blazing sun. Our horses were gentle creatures that were tortured by our weight!! They worked hard and earned every penny! We managed to find the only vegetarian eatery in the town, which also played relaxing music of all genre and offered accommodation which we quickly inhabited. Coroico has a relaxing atmosphere, offering wonderful treks and scenery. It was a time for us to refuel, ground ourselves and really enjoy. A big thank you to Roy for his time and wise words. He made our experience even more enjoyable.
