Another... uhm.... Favourite, amongst the locals.... the TATU, or armadillo in English.... It is quite a disgusting looking animal, but apparently it is quite... tasty? The people here love to eat armadillo's, but they seldom do.

Armadillo's are animals on the way to extinction, so hunting and killing them is illegal, thus eating them is illegal as well. But here "in the middle of nowhere" technicalities such as these don't really matter. So, people do often kill them, and usually sell them on. If you don't go about screaming you've killed an armadillo, then you should really be fine.

Armadillo meat is quite expensive. 3kg go for 50 reais. Making it equivalent to about 17 reais per kg, which in euros is about 6.60 per kg. This doesn't sounds very expensive for european standards. However, if you compare it to, for instance, cow meat, which here costs about 12 reais per kg, then you are looking at expensive meat.

Now, one of my friends, bought an armadillo this weekend, and guess what, I get to taste it when she cooks it! Now, I know I should be happy that I get to try new things, but looking at the animal, it doesn't really raise my appetite.... So yeah, I'll try it with apprehension, and try not to think too much of the animal in its full form, but yes as pieces of red meat in a pan.... Maybe that will make it tastier, no? Who knows, but I'll be sure to let you know how it was!!
