Well, it had to be done. It's 7:15 am and I just got home. I spent the night at this wild and crazy club called Amnesia, which is ironic because there is no possible way that I could forget the spectacle that unfolded before me this evening. For starters we got on the guest list somehow, through a friend of a friend, so we didn't have to pay the hefty 60 Euro cover. Things started off as normal... great music, fun people, the usual. I even thought- hey, what's the big deal with this club, it's like any spot in Vegas. And then the dancers, I'll call them movers-and-a-shakers, came out. There was 8, or so, of them lined up along a walkway stage that hung above the dance floor. Mostly women in studded rhinestone corsets, pink wigs and gynormous heels. And then there were the men. Chizzle cut, tanned Spanish beefcakes in stuffed leather speedos with a variety of accessories such as a fitted cape (oxy moron, I know... but think about it), leather ankle boots or socks with those hold up strap thingies that men never wear anymore. And the beauty of it all was their dancing because they really just did some movin' then some shakin'... literally. Posing and writhing to the deep house music like disatisfied models at a circus, sullen looks on their faces, playing these bored, disatisfied action figurines. It was wonderful, a really interesting concept for a show. Oh and a note about the men dancing... have u ever seen a beef cake cut a rug? So gleefully awkward, it was great.
I thought that was pretty neat and then my head got screwed on sideways and I stood blinking my eyes in amazement at the next show in the other room, on the big stage. The most outrageous and creative outfits I've ever seen in real life (that's strange but u know what I mean). I can't even begin to describe it but I will try...
Skirts and hats made entirely of balloons by some balloon animal wizard. Ariel circus performers dangling from metal rings and the drag queens.... oh the drag queens! You've got your traditional RuPaul type look and then there's the more edgy queens, in a skin tight, neon, colour smash cat suit and heels...for example. A true feast for the eyes. There were stilt walkers that paraded through the crowd, dressed in striped face masked that made them nearly unrecognizable as human beings. Oh yes and then there were the naked girls, yup that's right, just naked with big hats on their heads exploding crazy foam tentacles like psychedelic hair.
The crown jewel of the evening was my investment in bottled water, a key ingredient in managing body temperature in the sweaty, confinement of the dance floor. You all know I like a good dance party so naturally I wouldn't let that stop me. Drum roll please...€8 for a small bottle, I easily spent €50. Keep in mind it is 35 degrees outside over here.
"Aunt Em, I have a feeling we're not in Vegas anymore..."
