This is pretty f***ing great. I'm sitting on the patio, beachfront at Cafe Del Mar (have you heard of it?!). I spent the day on a boat excursion where I went scuba diving for the first time! It ended up being a surprise as Bass, the Canadian friend that I met at the airport in Barcelona, booked it and I wasn't really clear on the details. I'd say lost in translation but we both speak English sooooo... I think I was tired. For a number of reasons and factors, I didn't really think that scuba diving would work for me so I decided to do it(!). Wow, there is a whole other world down there. It's quiet and merky and somewhat celestial somehow, like being in a cloud or a dream. Surrounded in bubbles, I lost the ability to sense which way is up. My instructor, a deaf diver who did a funny photoshoot for me striking various poses, while putting on his wetsuit, stayed with me the whole time. I felt like I was going to sink with the giant tank strapped to my back and weights around my hips. It was totally invigorating and something I would be keen to try again. I wonder what it's like for Harvey, my instructor, below the sea. I would imagine that he enjoys it because speaking and hearing are not senses that anyone uses underwater.
Back to this moment at the cafe. There is this rocky beach area in front of our table where people are strew about on blankets throbbing to the beat of the ever present house music. It's like a heartbreat that seems to pulse this city into an ever flowing, sweaty summer trance. Today, I switched it up in the car and listened to a non-house music radio station :0... a little Nelly Furtado anyone?
I'm off to tuck in for an early night (it's 1:30am), staying up until 4am has become the norm on this trip. I'm planning on seeing some of the beautiful beaches of this town tomorrow for my last day in paradise before I head to Barcelona for my last night abroad. I can't imagine leaving the heat.
