Emma's Travels
Boy what I have got up to over the last couple of days. Tuesday morning Shona and I had to be ready for 6am to go on the camping/safari trip to Fraser Island. Met up with our group (ten of us in total in the one car) and there would be 3 cars leaving together. Lucky to have a really good group - 2 English girls Sarah and Julia who we had met the day before, 2 English boys Iain, Adam and James, a French Canadian couple called Alex and Miriam and a young Canadian girl called Maria. I decided from the start that there was no way in a million years that I was going to drive the car (it looked like an army vehicle) and there were so many rules that you had to remember that I figured I'd have more fun sitting in the back of the van. Well that proved to be hilarious. Just as well that they provided seat belts as every time we went over a bump it was like a ''fruit salad" in the back. Many heads hit the ceiling a fair few times. For anyone that doesn't know, Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and so we encountered a lot of soft sand and also pretty rough terrain on hills etc. As a result everyone in the back found themselves having to get out a few times and push the car to harder sand and then walk the rest of the way (no relaxing holiday for us).
Camping was better than I expected. We had a base camp at Cathedral Beach with toilets, showers, a cafe and cooking facilities. In the evenings all the groups would have dinner about 5pm and then spend the rest of the time drinking a few well needed pints until lights went out at 10pm. If you think that is early, then think again, we had to get up at 6am each morning and probably walked total of 15km on soft sand over the 2 days (tough on the ankles I tell you).
We visited some really cool places while on the island. Spent an afternoon at Lake McKenzie which is thought to be the world's most beautiful lake (and 10th most beautiful beach in the world), visited champagne rockpools, Eli Creek, Indie Head and did some walking. Saw turtles up close and also the infamous Australian 'dingo' which roam about the island. Thankfully they weren't agressive when we were there and we made it back to tell the tale. And no Rachael, there were no snakes. Actually we didn't really see many bugs during our camping trip. Just got a few bites at night and that was it.
Shona and I are now at Coolangatta and tommorow we are meeting up with Michelle and James to head up to Surfers Paradise for a few days. Weather had started to decline and its been miserable today. Coolanagatta is quite a small town and we are staying in a small youth hostel. Walked into town tonight for dinner and unexpectedly found out that it is their WINTER SUN weekend. Lots of festivities have been planned and tonight there were over 1400 vintage cars driving around the streets as part of a parade. Lots of the locals were dressed up as fifties characters such as Elivis and Rizzo from Grease and there were live bands playing outside with people dancing in the street. Very cool and it made me think of a quaint American town.
Anyway thanks for the messages posted so far. Not long til I am home, sob, hope you are all well
