Emma's Travels
Hi guys, just another quick update from Emma\'s Adventures Down Under.
As you will know from my last entry, Shona and I went sailing on a racing yacht called Eureka II at the weekend. I was a bit apprenhsive to say the least about being sea sick but I need not have worried. My sea legs seemed to come out of now where and I was a natural at sliding about the deck. I must have been a sailor in a past life.
In actual fact although the yacht could hold 15 passengers and 3 crew, there were only 9 of us. It made for a really nice sized group and we all got on like a house on fire. The Friday night was spent sailing out to an island were we anchored and spent the night having dinner on deck underneath the stars and drinking beer. (Definately a lifestyle I could get used to).
Saturday morning we were up by 7am to see the sunrise and then boarded a jetty (hair raising stuff) to Whistunday Island. We strolled through the Whistunday National Park and then ended up at Whithaven Beach which is the 6th most beautiful beach in the world. After lots of photographs we sunbathed for an hour or so before taking the jetty back to the yacht for lunch. The afternoon was spent snorkelling again, and this time I felt like a pro. I blame it on the clingy stinger suits that we had to wear that made me feel like a Thunder Cat. So much so that Shona and I decided to swim back from the island to the boat at the end instead of getting the jetty thinking that \'it would be a piece of cake\'. How wrong we were. It was definately further that we\'d imagined. When we got to the boat we were so knackered that it took me 5 attempts to try and clamber onto the boat and in the end I only managed with the help of 2 sturdy, fit men (no, I hadn\'t planned it if thats what your thinking). Evening was relaxed with card games, sitting on the deck and drinking beer again. I saw 2 shooting stars as well which was cool.
Sunday morning we woke just before 7am again. Glorious weather. We were offered the opportunity to go snorkelling again but since I was coming down with the cold (sympathy needed here) I opted against it and just stayed on deck sunbathing. Our morning was finished with some \'proper sailing\'. By this I mean that they decided to keel the boat and without much warning. One minute we are all sitting back with our sunglasses on and the next things the boat was on its side and Shona had gone flying to the opposite side of the deck. I was thinking in my mind, oh oh, we\'re going to do a remake of the Poseidon adventure here. I was hanging on for near life at the top end of the boat and have pains in my arms today from holding on. It was hilarious as everybody was sliding about onto the lower part of the boat. Thankfully they soon gave us a piece of rope to hoist ourselves up to the top of the boat where we were able to take advantage of the yacht keeling and it was incredible. It has definately given me a taste for sailing. Not that I think I will get any opportunities to do it back home in Scotland, but I highly recommend it to anyone that gets the chance.
Yesterday evening we spent the afternoon sunbathing by the Lagoon at Airlie Beach and had dinner with Paul and Lauren ( a couple from London) who we had met on the boat. It was Paul\'s birthday and so we had a few beers to celebrate too. Then Shona and I headed back to Beaches for a few drinks to prepare us for getting the night Greyhound at 11.50pm and then on a 13hour journey to Hervey Bay were we are today.
Just had lunch in an Irish pub for my birthday and then relaxing as we are up to be collected at 6am tommorrow to go on a 2 day camping Safari at Fraser Island. Hopefully there won\'t be too many bugs. But I\'m determined to do as many different things as possible out here.
Hope you are all well, keep the messages coming as this is better than checking my emails. I\'ll post again after my camping trip.
