After 22 hours of travelling we arrived into the squat and ugly town of Puerto Madryn, its only for a few days though, its all about the sealife here, and we immediately set about booking our tours.
Whales up first, standing on a beach at Penninsular Valdes the next day we awaited our launch along with the hoards. Seeing the amount of people being loaded onto the boat Emma cunningly suggested we hang around at the back to board last which meant we had the bow of the boat and the best view. And what views they were! We only had to wait 10 mins before we saw our first whale swimming with her calf. The southern right back whales return every year to the safe haven of the bay. It was worth being jostled by 60 year old Argentinian tourists and fighting our corner in the boat for some of the close up views we got of the pairs breaching, jumping and tail slapping - fantastic.
Next up were the elephant seals. Ugly buggas that make the most grotesque noises. Normally lazing on the beach not doing a great deal, we were treated to a bit of action as one plucky young male tried to move in on a hareem of females but the alpha male was having none of this and chased him off down the beach in a blur of wobbling blubber - they can certainlymove when they want to! Slightly disappointed the Orcas were nowhere to be seen, we were also relieved that we didnt witness an Orca beaching itself and snatching a seal pup in a flurry of teeth.
Dinner that evening at Puerto Madryns reputeded best fish restaurant, we discovered the delights of Bianchi Chablis, we'll certainly be looking out for that label again!
