Arriving just before 6am we sat and watched the sun rise over the snowy peaks surrounding the town before heading to a B&B. Emma was full of cold and unsettettled bus sleep meant a day in bed for her. Fortunately, the room came with cable which meant a full Saturday of Premiership football for Jona.
After a proper kip Emma was feeling better and we downgraded from the B&B to a hostel more suited to our budget. Sunday afternoon beers turned into Sunday evening beers and we headed for a decent looking asado. Oh my God! What a meal, it went straight into Jona`s top 3 of all time. We ate lamb cooked the proper Patagonian way - whole carcas splayed on a cross cooked slowly over a wood fire, talk about melt in the mouth, and accompanied by the Bianchi Chablis, heaven on earth!
The next day we hopped on a bus to the neighbouring little Welsh colony of Trevelin. We've not got the hang of this siesta thing, the place was like a ghost town and the tea rooms had shut up shop for the afternoon. A brief visit to a museum all about the Welsh settlers, before heading back to Esquel.
A visit to Esquel wouldn't have been complete without a ride on the La Trochita, part of the former Patagonian Express. This narrow guage steam train, built in 1922, snakes its way through the Patagonian hills. Each of the original wooden carriages had a wood burning stove to keep passengars warm, but we decided the best place for us would be the equally cute tea carriage where we watched the views roll by over a pot of tea and some chocolate cake. We both found it all rather amusing.
