A picturesque bus journey through the mountainous lake district we arrived on the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi and Bariloche town. We'd made a reservation in what we'd heard was a good hostel, which had the most fantastic panoramic views from the 10th Floor Penthouse of an apartment block. The sun was shining, so for the rest of the afternoon we sat on the balcony soaking up the stunning views.
We spent the next day getting our bearings around the Alpine style town, complete with St. Bernard dogs and puppies on standby in the square for photo opportunities. We were most excited to discover that the excellent Jauja ice-cream from El Bolson was on sale in town, and you couldnt move for the hundreds of chocolate shops.
Saturday was World Cup Semi Finals day and we met up with Katie and Rich to watch England beat France. A few celebratory aperitifs on our balcony before heading out to the best Parrilla in town, El Boliche de Alberto. It was a unique set up with the meat chefs personally taking each meat order to ensure it was cooked exactly how you ask. Emma found her favourite lamb asado to rival Jona's from Esquel. Utterly delicious. A few cocktails after dinner for old times sake and it was our final goodbye to Katie and Rich.
Graced with clear sunny skies we headed to the slopes of La Catedral for the penultimate day of the season. There were only a few runs still open so we had a lazy days boarding with lots of coffee breaks to enjoy the views of lakes and wooded hills. Hugely impressed with the resort, we vowed to return one day for some summer boarding. Having worked up an appetite on the slopes we returned to the same excellent restaurant, ordered the same delicious meal, only this time there were 2 of us, we still ate it all though!
Despite our adventurous plans for spending the next day hiking around Llau Llau, the weather had turned, so we went out and bought a huge box of chocolates and mooched around the hostel. It was this filthy day that we first met Jerry and Dave, part of the Cork Contingent, and Karolyn the Swedish nutball.
We were sad to leave Bariloche, but onwards to Mendoza and besides, we'll be back one day for the skiing.
