On Sunday we decided to go to the Great Wall of China. There were lots of different tours to choose from, going to different sections of the wall. We decided on a tour that included a 10 Km walk from Jingshaling to Simatai. We had to leave the hostel at 6.40 and had to travel 3 hours to get there. It was well worth it, but very hard work. It was a big climb to get up to the wall itself, and then it was up and down all the way - don't think either of us have ever been so hot and sweaty. The views were stunning and it is a wonder how it was ever built- people still live in the area, but it is in the middle of nowhere. You could choose how to get down from the wall - walk or zip wire. We took the zip wire. There we were harnessed together with backpacks and dropped from a 200 meter height across the river. Scary at first, but great fun!! If nothing else the speed gave a great breeze.
We then decided to celebrate our achievement and birthday in style by trying proper Peking Duck. So much better than the stuff at home. We even treated ourselves to a bottle of wine and a dish with rice (all for a tenner each) Not bad going. So as birthdays go, it was a lot of hard work but well worth it!
