after saying goodbye to Kim, it was time for us to leave new zealand. i did start to feel alittle down as i one of my best mates had left us after it seemed she'd travelled with us from the start and we was leaving new zealand which had been the best place we'd been to so far, and i dont think i was ready to leave. However, i was excited to see what australia had to offer.
we got to the airport and checked in fine. and then we had to sit and wait for a couple of hours as we got to the airport way too early. luckily, we bumped into alice, after she had been delayed for 5 hours, so from talking to her it past the time pretty quick and before we new it, it was time to board the plane. we was yet again quite lucky with what plane we had as it was quite nice and got more room than usual. after a 4 hour flight we landed and had a 45 minute wait in a shuttle bus in the blistering heat until the driver decided to actually move anywhere. we arrived at our hostel, Base, in st kilda and was lucky again as this hostel wasnt bad. the sheets were clean on lauras bed for once, and we had air conditioning (the thing we needed the most). after dropping our stuff off in the room we were all hungry and decided to have a wonder around st kilda to find somewhere to eat. as we walked down the main street the first place that came to my attention was the cake shops. oh my days, these were the best shops i'd ever seen in my life and they wernt just one, there were like 10 cake shops in arow on acland street, you should have seen my face. i think i spent atleast afew minutes at every cake shop front window just looking in on all the cakes they had. then we came across an ice cream shop that was even better. we eventually found a nice and cheap place to eat and after food we headed back to our room, had a shower (which due to the droughting, had 4 minutes to shower) and went to bed.
the next day we woke up and decided to get a start on with looking for jobs. we found loads of jobs at first and emma made a start with ringing round and asking if they was any positions available. we soon started to realise no body was goin to give us jobs, not only due to the weather being so hot with bush fires and floods happening throughout australia, but we hadn't sorted our bank accounts or tax file numbers either so we couldnt get a job until then. so we had a pretty pointless day of searching the internet for jobs we couldnt apply for. the next day we had to be out of the base hostel as it was fully booked, so we booked accommodation elsewhere had the most rubbishist tea we'd ever had then headed bk to our room and to bed.
the next day soon arrived, we put our bags in storage and headed for a wonder round. we ended up at the beach for the afternoon and it was red hot. i didnt even know that we was going to the beach so i didnt put my swimming stuff on, but emma and laura had. so i decided to go for a little walk on the promanarde and see what was at the end, while laura and emma tried there best to get tans. i walked for abit and came across some fishermen so i stopped and watched them for a while. one fisherman caught the best fish i'd ever seen anyone catch before, i was amazed, but the man said that it was quite small and threw it back into the sea, so that scared me from going in the sea as they was bigger fish out there that could attack me. so i stayed well clear. i walked alittle further to the end of the promanarde and came across quite alot of rocks over looking st kilda harbour. i walked up to a sign, much to my delight as it read that it was a protected area for the smallest penguins in the world and water rats which were endangered. so i stayed around looking for abit, then decided to walk back to the beach with an ice cream to find the other two, who were sun bathing. after being on the beach for a whole ten minutes i soon got bored and found a tennis ball which managed to pass some time as i just threw it up in the air and caught it. until laura got up from worshipping the sun and decided she wanted to play catch with me. laura was better at both throwin and catchin even amy had to admit it!!! ( thats what she thinks, i was really loads better). after playing catch we all crashed out on the beach for half an hour before heading to our hotel for the evening. we picked our bags up and caught a taxi to our hotel, as our bags were so heavy we couldnt bare carrying them in the heat to the hotel. we arrived at the hotel, and all our hearts sank. there is no other way to put this but it was an utter s*** hole. the receptionist guy looked like a serial killer and acted really strange. he showed us to our room and it was the worst room i'd ever seen in my life. there was 2 bunk beds that were rank and there was a manky chair in the corner that looked like someone had died in. we all couldnt bare to sleep in the beds, so we all got our sleeping bags out to sleep on. there was no air conditioning either, so we went to open the window and half of it was boarded up and it took me and emma to push the window open so we had some form of ventilation as it stunk and was very hot. after putting our stuff in the worst hotel i'd been in, we went for a walk around to find some where to have some tea. after walking for 5 minutes we realised we was also in the worst area of st kilda we could possibly be in, with prositutes on streets corners and every pub we walked past looked like a crack den with homeless people outside. we found somewhere decent, had food then walked back to have a sleepless night in the hotel that looked like something out of a horror movie.
the next day turned out to be the hottest day in recorded history. i think it got up to 46 degrees, so we couldnt do anything except find a place that was air conditioned and stay there until it started to get dark. that night we decided to walk to the beach and on the promanarde to try see if any little penguins were coming in for the night. it was a lovely night we just managed to see the sun setting as we walked down to the rocks. as we got there people was already gathering to see penguins and there was a woman who worked with the penguins shining a massive red light touch at the ones that had already come in. after a while people started to leave but we decided to stay and watch for any more as the woman said they dont usually come in until 10pm, so we made our sens comfy and sat and watched. much to our luck a penguin swam right under our feet and climbed up onto the rocks, it was absolutely amazing. it climbed up on to the rocks and made its way further up away from the water. we was practically in touching distance away from it. we sat and watched that penguin for quite awhile then a couple of others swam in and jumped up on to the rocks. it was brilliant to see the smallest penguins in the world actually in the wild. it was by far the best night of the trip so far. however, the weather suddenly changed. one minute it was hot, no wind and a very calm sea. the next minute the wind picked up so much and the sea got so wavey we thought godzilla was about to pop out in front of us. so we decided to quickly make our ways bk to solid land and away from the sea. it def cooled the atmosphere down tho, as it was so hot, we needed this breeze to keep us cool.
the next day was the day of st kilda festival. all the roads were closed for this festival. it had live music, bmx riders and a fair ground. it was great. however, laura and emma for some reason wanted to go bk to the hotel to get changed which was a walk away. so i stayed at the festvial and listened to some music with some random americans until they decided to come back. but they then decided they wasnt coming bk, so i made the most of the festival trying to see as much as possible. the bmx riders were awesome, they were doing flips upside and alsorts i must have spent a good hour watch those guys, then decided to watch some bands that i'd never heard of. i soon got into it tho until they started playing dance music, so i then decided to call it a day and head back to meet laura and emma. we also got in contact with a friend we had made in new zealand to see if we could crash at his place for awhile, he agreed so we chatted for a long time and fell to sleep as we had loads to sort out the next day.
the next day we went to sort out our tax file number and bank account out ready for working. this was loads easier then i thought it would be. it literally took 5 minutes for our tax code cos we had to fill out a form, n prob 20 minutes for our bank accounts. the rest of the day we spent shopping and bought new austrailian sim cards, as its loads cheaper for us to phone you all now, then headed to the beach for a picnic. the beach was pretty windy and cold, but we cracked on with our picnic. however, seagulls kept annoying us, so emma decided to throw food at them. which was the worst thing she could have done. because out of no where, a big swarm of birds came straight at us. im not kidding there was about 60 birds all around us squarking at us for food, it was like a scene out of the film, the birds. so i decided to throw my flip flop at them which helped and they soon flew away when we didnt give them any more food. after this, we headed bk to the hotel to pick our bags up and we caught a tram into the town centre where we was catching a train to ballarat to stay at our friend adams house for afew days. and at this moment we are currently in ballarat at adams place.
