Tuesday 3pm
Left Te Anau at 7am on Sunday morning, bus down to Invercargill, then 10.30 got a scenic shuttle around the Catlins area up to Dunedin. Was a really nice day, but long. The trip was a bit of a wildlife one, saw Sea Lions, Seals and the really rare yellow eyed penguins, had to sit in a hut for nearly half an hour waiting for them to come in from the sea, felt like a bird watcher! Didn't get into Dunedin till 7.30 that night, so didn't really see much of the city, although the driver was very nice and gave us a whistle stop tour of the place, so e can say we sa it, before dropping us off at the hostel, went to the supermarket to stock up on fruit and cereal and stuff, was in bed by 9.30, so tired.
Yesterday went from Dunedin to Lake Tekapo, a really good day, it is actually warm now and i've had to dig out the sun tan lotion. Our first stop was at the worlds steepest street, which we walked up, We then stopped to see the the Moeraki Boulders, huge round rocks scattered on a beach, also stopped for photos of Mount Cook looking at it across a lake, which was an amazing colour, the driver said we were lucky to have a clear view, as most days there is still a layer of cloud around the mountain but we didn't have that. At Lake Tekapo i did a 2 hour horse trek around the lake and up the mountains, which was amazing, once i stopped worrying about falling off! Took about 10 mins to get used to it, although i automatically picked up the reins in the correct way which surprised me and the bloke as i said i wasn't a rider. Bit sore today, but thought i'd be lots worse. Last night was good, the driver took $10 (about 3.75)off everyone who wanted to participate and did a BBQ, lots of sausages, steak and chicken which was nice, even fruit salad and ice cream for dessert! i also had a 4 bed room all to myself which was luxury, forgot what it was like to have my own room.
This morning traveled from the Lake up to Christchurch, really hot today, lots of farms on the way, more dairy then sheep, apparantly lots of farmers are going this way as there is currently more money in milk. Also learnt that the world record for number of sheep sheared in a day is 751, thats a lot of sheep.
Tomorrow i have a day of nothing planned so a lie in i think, it will be a novelty not getting on a bus at 8 in the morning. Thursday i am going to the the Tranzalpine Train journey, all day on the train, it is apparantly worth it, better than a bus i guess.
