We started the day by heading out to the Cu Chi tunnels. The tunnels were constructed by the Vietcong during the American war. They were used to evade bombs, make movements easier and allow the Vietcong to engage in Guerrila warfare. They lie about 40km outside of Saigon and were constructed very close to a number of American military bases. The district of Cu Chi was one of the most heavily bombed areas of Vietnam during the war as the Americans tried, but failed, to destroy the tunnels.
Upon arriving at the tunnels we were shown a video made by the Northern Vietnamese during the war. It told us the story of how the people of Cu Chi changed from farmers to "American Killer Heroes." We were also told about a young girl who decided to fight the Americans and had killed 118 American soldiers. After taking our fill of propaganda for the day we headed into a new jungle (the old jungle had been completely destroyed by napalm) and saw the ingenuity of the Vietnamese people. The tunnels had three levels and contained kitchens, maternity wards, workshops and living areas. We also saw some of the traps the Vietcong made out of bamboo. I never knew how deadly bamboo could be.
We left Cu Chi and headed back to Saigon. We visited the War Remnants museum, which used to be called the museum of American Atrocities. We learned much more about some of the events that happened during the war. There were shocking pictures of some of the horrible things that happened to Vietnamese civilians and we learned about the lasting effects of chemical warfare. The use of 'Agent Orange' caused several generations of Vietnamese to be born with mutations and is still affecting people today.
We left the museum feeling drained, but we had to keep our strength up because our next target was the market. We had already eyed up what we wanted to get and now we headed there ready to haggle. Eventually, the constant harassment got too much and we headed back to the hotel feeling satisfied with what we'd bought.
