A long travel day today to cross the border into Vietnam. After four hours through small villages and lots of countryside we reach the border. Luckily its quiet and there aren't any queues. We have to carry all our stuff about 300m to get stamped out of Cambodia then into Vietnam, paying one dollar for the privelege on the Vietnamese side. Then its off to Chau Doc, about an hour from the border.
This city is right on the Mekong Delta and most of the local people live on large floating houses along the river banks. Apparently the government has allowed people to do this for free so that they don't need to buy land to build a house.
After checking into our very basic hotel, we go on a boat trip to visit a local fish farm. Here, one of the floating house has created a compartment underneath to house hundreds of fish that go absolutely crazy when you throw food into them. The stench is pretty awful and the fish are packed in incredibly tightly. We won't be ordering seafood here.
The boat trip continues to a small village where they try to sell us a variety of overpriced souvenirs then onto the opposite side of the river where we walk through part of the city to see the mosque. On the way we pass street sellers selling duck heads, chicken heads and boiled eggs that had a chick in them. Luckily Luke was not drawn to trying any of these local delights.
We had a pleasant dinner at our hotel's restaurant, a floating platform on the river's edge. There was time to sample the new Saigon local beer before heading off for a much needed sleep.

oatcake mum I am so pleased you've come across the eggs with a chick in them. One of my Philippine nurses loves them, she says they're delicious. Can't believe the boy wimped out on trying one!!
