I thought I was fit! I am not so sure anymore!
This week I have hiked the Inca Trail and trekked through the Amazon. My thoughts when walking Dead Woman's Pass were.....how the hell did you think you would be able to run a marathon, do half an iron man, or run through the desert for 5 days non stop (I didnt actually really ever think I could do the desert one, but it sounded like a cool thing to do.....) Perhaps I should take things one step at a time. Leigh, Gemma and Michelle you will know what I am talking about! Although looking back now it doesn't seem so bad at all!
The first day on the Inca Trail was brilliant, we were all mega excited about the next few days. The sun was shining at the walk was pretty tame. A head of ourselves we had an hour or so to relax and take a dip in the stream before heading off to lunch, camp, sunbath and play cards.... honestly the Inca Trail was tough!
The second day was when we did the Dead Woman's Pass, going from 2500 meters to 4200 meters....it seemed never ending. The weather wasn't so nice, in fact it pretty much rained from the moment we set off from camp to the second I reached the top of Dead Woman's Pass.
The third day was the best, the weather was great until lunch and the walk was pretty easy....I took today nice and slowly. After lunch it turned bitter cold and made our decent down over 2000 stairs....This killed by toes and I am now pretty sure I will loose my toe nails in a couple of weeks.
On the last day we were up at 4 am to ensure we had the magical moment on reaching Machupicchu..... unfortunately this magical moment didn't happen due to a lot of fog. After our tour, the fog had cleared and we were able to soak up the views , but we were keen and excited by the promise of thermal baths for our aching legs....these turned out to be disgusting and a huge disappoint, so we went for the beer we had been thinking about for 4 days.
I had a night back in Cuzco before another early start and my trip to the jungle! The heat when we landed in Puerto Maldonado hit me, never been anywhere so hot and humid. From there it was a 2 hour bus drive and a 2 hour canoe ride into the jungle. Our lodge was lovely and even had its own monkey that ran around in a nappy. The first night we did a night walk where we saw and ate creepy crawlies...mmmmm! Everything in the jungle seems to be super sized! The next day we did a 6 hour trek further into the jungle looking at local plant like and there traditional medical uses.....they have something for everything in there! Although not sure I would trust a bit of tree sap as contraceptive! On Halloween evening we went looking for Cayman....and our guide found a baby one. I surprised myself by being terrified of it!
The last week has been brilliant, I am now in Puno and exhausted. Off to Lake Titicaca tomorrow.
What is going on in England?
Love you all lots
