Hello again!
Had a busy few days but not as busy as the next 10 days will be.
After arriving in Nazca we visited the Chauchilla Cemetery and saw lots of mummies from the pre inca times....kind of spooky, we were climbing over hundreds of bones.
From there we went to the Nazca lines and took a tiny plane, for a rocky trip over the lines. The pilot kept taking his hands off the steering thing....yes both hand! He was using one to show us the lines and the other to hold the map.....it was pretty scary and by the end of the flight I was a very sweaty and white mess. The lines themselves were much smaller (or as least it seemed they were, it was difficult to grasp how high we were) and not a clear as I had expected but defiantly glad I visited them.
Before the night bus to Arequipa we went for a tradition meal that is cooked in the Andes at times of celebration. After a long windy journey down a small lane into what seemed the middle of nowhere we arrived at what looked like a house and were taken out to the garden and shown a mound of soil and told our dinner was underneath. After a small ceremony the soil was removed to reveal a hole will all sorts being cooked...potatoes, peas, corn, cheese, pork and chicken all cooked with herbs and separated by banana leaves. It was yummy!
I spent the next day in Arequipa, although Peru´s second city it is tiny and very welcoming.....a lovely place to stay. I visited the Santa Catalina monestry and I also got a cuddle with and Alpaca/Llama. Later I ate Alpaca and Ostrich.......mmmm
I have just returned from a couple of days in the Colca Canyon where we went to a height of 5000 meters and had my first taster of Coca leaves. First in Coca tea (Yes Mum and Dad, I drank tea!) It tasted like hot water....with leaves, about as exciting as normal tea! Then we chewed on some coca leaves and small amount volcanic ash which is used as a catalyst.
Once we had arrived at our very beautiful lodge in a small village just outside Chivay we went for a 2 hour trek, the first test before the Inca trail. I coped fine, but you certainly can´t push yourself. We then went to relax in the hot springs in Chivay before heading for dinner.
I am up at 4.30 tomorrow for a flight to Cuzco where the fun starts....Inca trail, Amazon and Lake Titicaca!
Night night
