Last night Sophie and I ended up in a really chilled out bar sitting on a balcony overlooking Khao San road which is the backpacker road that we were staying on. We met a group of British tourists who invited us over to their table and we chatted the night away before Sophie and I did the sneaky loo-escape-back-to-our-hostel trick...but last nights sleep certainly made up for our overnight train trip the night before. We had proper beds with proper mattresses! I woke early but snoozed in bed for a few hours before we packed up our backpacks and left them at the hostel while we explored Bangkok. We walked to the Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha, Reclining Buddha and saw Wat Arun. There were millions of people everywhere and it took us some one to realise that it was a Buddhist holiday and everybody was paying their respects to the Buddhist temples. We were still feeling very raw from our sunburn so wary afternoon we found some shade and sat down for some lunch.
Yesterday evening we took a taxi from the rain station to our hotel and the taxi driver quoted us 150B, us being exhausted and slightly heat stroked just got in the taxi and told him where we were going. When we arrived I asked him to show us the meter and he laughed at us when it showed 53B. So always make sure that you tell the text driver to turn the meter on, and if he refuses and scoffs at you, you scoff back and find another taxi, his loss.
By about 5pm we were keen to get our bags and slowly make our way to the train staton for our 10.50pm train but we ended up sneaking back into our hostel where our bags were being kept and quietly charged our phones and cameras, borrowing the wifi and skyping friends and family all while scamming an airconditioned room. Naughty naughty! At 9pm we picked up our packs (they're getting heavier every day) and made our way to the train station. We ate dinner while waiting for our train, and chatted while we waited for our train, and sat and waited for our train some more. Unfortunately neither Sophie or I can speak or understand any more than a few works in Thai but after many announcements on the loudspeaker we figured that our train was running late. So that already puts us behind schedule, but we'll get to Koh Phangan eventually. And we've made a pact with another group of backpackers who are getting off at the same station to wake each other up so nobody is left behind.
While we were hiding out in our hostel borrowing internet and power, we got a message from Emily in Chiang Mai saying that an overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok had been derailed, of course I googled it to find out more information and I found out that it had happened 2 days before we caught the same train, lucky I didn't know about it before we caught the train otherwise I would not have slept a wink of sleep! Although it did make me a bit concerned about the overnight train we were about to board from Bangkok to Chumphon!! Ah well, what will be, will be. Although I'm pretty sure my insurance doesn't cover train derailment, but then it probably doesn't cover things like crossing the road either and I consider that more of a life threatening situation than an overnight train or two.
