Texas Texas Texas.. is our day song.. "here comes the summer sun.. He burns my skin... I breathe again.. I'm over you" .. Pumping it up in the car, whilst driving over the Texan border into scorching heat.. Texas we have arrived!
First stop, Houston.. And Houston we definitely do not have a problem.. Talk about hostel in a minted area! swimming pool and all.. Shame we were only staying for a night. On arrival we were greeted by another guest who goes by the name of Shaun, from Canada. Well if I could have shot myself in the eye there and then I quite happily would have. It took him about an hour to get one sentence out and when he eventually spoke the question was "so have you tasted the water in your hotel room?" .... What the hell mate?! Good conversation starter! So after our lovely conversation with Shaun boy and him asking us to play monopoly and him showing us his iPad, as we have never EVER seen one before we went to our room scarred for life. We had a lil' bit of pre drink before heading to Washington Street for some casual drinks! We went to a bar called "something (cant remember the first part )swingers"... And I'm pretty sure it actually was a swingers bar.. We were just about to leave and the waitress brought over two drinks ordered from the guys at the bar.. So stayed for that before trekking to find another bar. This was unsuccessful, so Josie went into an Irish bar to order us a taxi before heading for an early night. In the bar though, the bar lady told Josie that I was the skinniest girl she'd ever seen.. Im sorry if I'm not overweight like quite a lot of America.. Jeeeeez.. Slightly offended and slightly flattered at the same time!! Got back and as ever Josie was hungry for some pizza.. She got a little crazy and went through quite a few numbers.. With no success!
Next morning we rose to chill at our pool.. Was lush to just catch up on some rays. However, as most of you have already seen.. And whoever hasn't, this story could only ever happen to me and Josie.. Trouble deffo follows us around. The Houston News were at our hostel and wanted to interview us, I mean our of all the guests they chose us- God knows why! Me in a bikini with no make up and Josie with roots on her hair.. Classic. However, they used our shots on the 4 o'clock channel 11 Houston news. And now we are superstars in the making! I've heard Simon Cowell is head hunting me as we speak! After watching the clip, I can officially say I do not have a Newport accent! Although, I did almost say minging on TV, which would have been quite entertaining! I'm getting the word to Texas, believe me.
http://www.khou.com/news/local/Houstons-first-hostel-offers-low-cost-lodging-for-travelers-130743428.html .. There's the link if any one is interested in having a gander.. It's quite funny!
Back on the road, Texas, Day 2! Making our way to big city, Dallas!!
We stopped off at Lake Conroe, and were going to chill there for the day. However, due to most texans having a stupid amount of money, the whole lake was cut off for private gardens. So we stopped at a 'city' called Montgomery, a city with a population of 421 people, precisely- I did my research.. It was a proper cowboy town, with saloons, cowboy shops and ranches.. Cutest place ever! We stopped for a beverage to rehydrate before getting back on the road.
After speaking to my personal tour guide, Jack.. He recommended stopping of at a town called Huntsville where he went to college, so we did. Cute little town and visited the 10foot statue of Mr Houston.. Well I thought it was ten foot, it was actually 65 foot! Ooooopsie! Got a bit muddled up there! We then went for a drink in a college bar and missed our freshers nights out- so that was it! Hotel was booked, we stayed to experience an American uni freshers night!
Pre drinks (I know this seems to be a theme) consisted of me pretty much singing and rapping the words to Bruno Mars & Gym Class Hereos.. Much to Josie's entertainment as the whole thing was video'd. I think I make quite a good rapper myself!
Drinks went down well and we went to a bar called the jolly fox. It wasn't too busy but the bar man kept us entertained and wanted a lock in.. He Charged us $2 dollars for a drink all night.. So the dissarano and cokes were flowing nicely!
Got home and was shouted at by Josie not to go to sleep as she was determined to order pizza.. It as if she has gone cold turkey and is crazy for some... I am scared to be around her when shes Had a Few and after some pizza! She's mean.. And pretty sure she's a feeder! And when I mean determined I mean, calling about twenty five numbers.. That's not even an exaggeration!! Unfortunately for her, everywhere was closed.. This led to my next shouting at..
Josie went to sleep, while I stayed up for a bit. My bites got mega mega itchy so needed the car keys, so had to wake josie. She was out of it.. Telling me the cakes were upstairs, that she had the football.. And last of all that she didn't have the car keys. When I knew full well she did... She woke in the morning to not remember any of it- just video evidence!
Morning arrived and on to Dallas it was! Quite entertaining journey where I'm not quite sure, but think Britney came on the radio.. Once or twice.. Or maybe like a million times!! The radio does not know how to mix it up... We switched on a Texan radio station and pumped out some Texan country tunes to get us in the mood!
Got to our next place to be greeted by an English guy with a blue mohawk! When I first looked in the window I thought it was a parrot.. Then our host turned up... The most amazing host, Carlos. A proper Dallas cowboy in his 50's ready to show us girls a good time! He had planned our evening and we were ready to rock and roll..
First up, dinner. Second up, two step lessons at our accommodation. Third up.. A party night and wild western dancing lessons at the red boot saloon! What a night.. Arrived with Carlos, Noel and the two french boys, and don't mean to be rude- but cannot remember let alone pronounce their names... For the blogs sake I'll call them bath and blue shorts! Me and Josie both braved it and each danced with Carlos in the lessons. Then Josie danced with bath and blue shorts asked me to dance. Quite entertaining as none of us had the foggiest what we were doing and caused a bit of congestion dancing around on the dancefloor! Carlos pulled and was teaching these sisters his moves ;) ..
Then came the rodeo bull... Well I thought I was in Texas, so it had to be done! Carlos was on the ball with the picture taking and managed to film my, i would call graceful bull ride!! I didn't do bad for my first time.. Josie, the French boys and Noel all had a go too! The atmosphere in this saloon is EXACTLY how you would imagine cowboy land to be! Line dancing around the bar on the dance floor... Loved every second..!
We decided to leave for an hour or so to get some pre drinks in and as we left the most amazing lightening and storms were going on.. It had gone from scorching to incredible storms! On the way home we were winding the French boys up.. Teaching them all new words.. They already new foof.. Can you believe it?! And I also had blue shorts convinced that my dad was a vicar and I was a virgin, and would only sleep with someone after marriage.. To his response was " thats good, now I don't have to cheat on my girlfriend" ... Honestly, he didn't stand a chance anyway! The french don't do it for me! Texans on the other hand... I knew I looked sweet and innocent, if I had them falling for that!
We headed back to the saloon for about 11pm ready for what they call a balloon drop, where basically they drop balloons full of money and all the girls pop them to get the money. Basically a way for men to perv on the women.. We both weren't comfortable with this, so the crazy dancing came out to play! All is good fun! Carlos was like our version of Mr Chow in Bangkok, holding mine and Josie's bags and being incredibly snap happy for the majority of the night!
Noel almost led himself in a spot of bother.. While Carlos delegated my camera to him.. He was being snap happy until he was approached by the cowboys and told to stop taking pictures and pervving on me and Josie.. Very funny indeed!
Friday, Friday.. Gotta get down on Friday ... State Fair of Texas.. And talk about excited!! Couldn't wait to get yet another taste of real life Texas. We were on our way to the fair, when we were stalked slightly by a guy.. Blatantly trying to show off.. He was having this conversation about god knows what, but he was actually talking to no one.. Slightly surreal experience if you ask me! Arrived to an amazing atmosphere with my ( what I like to call my cowgirl top) and my hair in a plait! Country girl right here!! ... I think I'm either going to live either an extremely country life, where I don't have to get dirty or a very city life, where dollar is all I need.. I'm still undecided!
One guy asked where I went to college and when I said Wales- he said "girl, I thought you were a Texan girl with that outfit!" Now that is what I call a result!! It's going on my gravestone when I die!!
We did lots of fun stuff.. Watched a dog show, where they could do back flips, a spirit of the horse show and even went to a petting zoo.. Exciting stuff.. But the most exiting thing has got to be the goat competition... Mmmmm... Although, as we had both dreamed about milking a cow?! god knows why.. We were both gutted that we missed the demonstration of that! We played some fair ground games with no luck at winning any prizes... Annnd did a very American thing by posing for photos in a photo booth! I am a secret Texan at heart I've known it for years...! A very fun filled day at the Texas State Fair..
Later that evening we had an evening full of plaaaaaans.. We took a train to Fort Worth, again recommended by my personal tour guide.. On the train, we were very naughty and had a sneaky vodka out of our water bottles! Tut tut!
Got to Fort Worth and had to get a bus to the Stockyards.. While on the bus a guy from porta rica started chatting to us and this is one reason why i love Texas.. "are you guys models?" .. Done! My life is now complete!
Arrived at the stockyards and went to see a traditional Texan rodeo.. Was a bit shocked when the first cowboy lassoed a baby calf but then I realised they let it go.. Soooo got in the spirit and loved it. There is NOTHING sexier than a cowboy.. I think they even take over firemen! (Sorry Barry!) .. Then came the bulls. The cowboys riding the bulls.. Crazy!!! How they survived and man, it must've hurt their boy bits!
The funniest part for me was that they got children up from the audience and just let a calf out in the ring and the kids had to chase it.. Like it was practice for when they were older. Then it was the under 7's.. Yes under 7's (meaning 3,4,5,6 and 7 year olds) turn to chase a fully grown sheep! I found it so funny.. Get them in young aye!
Bit put off when we first went in when a cowboy in the audience would not stop staring, was so awkward did not know where to look! I know were tourists but come on dude! The same thing happened with a group of men but two of their wives were with them.. Was slightly scared that if they were caught we would've ended up in a scrap with their wives!
Next stop: The famous 6000 people club that is Billy Bob's.. Huge night club! Would love to organise an event in this place! While we were in the queue, people kept walking past and like girls why you so cold.. Because it was freezing!!! And were not used to the cold coming from Wales.. Pfffft!
Night Was such good fun and met the Boot King, apparently famous in Texas.. But I'm not convinced! His friend also didn't believe that we were British and that we were just putting a British accent on to talk to the boot king.. However, he did believe that we were models.. Another result. How he believed we were models I'll never know as the average height, boy & girl is about 6foot! I felt short and I do not like feeling short so spent most of my night on tip toes to feel tall again! It's odd because at home i'm taller than most guys & girls where here I looked like a dwarf!
Carlos, bless him came to pick us up in his RV but feeder Josie wanted pizza again. I was adamant this time and put my foot down! We fell asleep in the car on the way back home and Daddy Carlos woke us when we go back home!
In the morning we woke about tenish so had a nice little lie in until about tenish. FaceTimed my amazing family and Maisie (minus Jack, as he is still living his freshers week up) and it made me miss them millions!
Off to downtown Dallas we headed though. First stop, is what they call the heart attack grill.. And restaurant where they advertise how bad the meal is for you. Now those that know me well, you can imagine this is my actual worst nightmare!!! But I braved it went in and polished off a stupid amount of calories in a humongous burger! I bit into the burger and grease ran down my finger.. I almost gagged. They even put you in hospital gear as they say you will die.. Great news there! After consuming what is about 7 days worth of food for me, my belly looks like I had been pregnant for 6months we lay on a spot of grass purely just because we couldn't move!
When our food babies had disappeared we went to the spot where Kennedy was killed. And I'm not going to lie, but I didn't actually know that much about him, just that he was a president.. So Josie took more of an interest than me. While I just struggled with the extra stone I had on me from that burger!
We headed back home before a chilled night and going to see Friends with Benefits with the hottest man alive Justin Timberlake! It cost us $1.75 to go and see a movie... About 90% cheaper than back home.. Crazy!! Film was so funny and made me really excited to go to NYC, the big apple!
Unfortunately my texas leg of the journey has come to an end, although I am determined to come back.. It's too cool not to visit again! We want to thank Carlos so so much for looking after us while we been here! It's Been amazing!!
Heading onto Nashville, Tennessee (we think), while making our way up to Chicago!!
See y'all soon cowboys ;)
