Today saw us set off bright and early to do a loop of the Atherton Tablelands. Before heading there we went to Gordonvale. Due to it being a Saturday, the local markets were on. So we had a look around these before going to a local bakers, that make pies everyone raves about. We sat and ate one of those and then set off along the gillies Highway.
The Gillies Highway is a very long and winding road, with some very steep and narrow areas. Allena was driving this section, so I got to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Our first stop was Lake Berrine. This is a freshwater lake surrounded by lovely rainforest. We were told to go to the visitor centre here for scones and cream, and I am glad we did. They were lovely and fresh, I really enjoyed them....I could have gone back for more.....We spent some time looking around the lake and then set off again. I must add, it is freezing up there. I had shorts and a t-shirt on and the heating in the car was very welcoming.......
Following this I took over driving and we went to yungaburra, this is another true Aussie town. We spent a bit of time here looking around the local shops at all the local artists work and then went for a drink in the local pub.
We wanted to get to Mareeba to go to the coffee works there, so set off and briefly spent some time in Atherton. Bizarrely most the shops here were closed and it looked like a ghost town.......
We reached Mareeba coffee works with plenty of time to spend there. Allena went to coffee world, which is like a museum dedicated to coffee. There she was able to sample coffees from around the world as well as chocolates and liqueurs. I went to the chocolate works and was able to sample lots of chocolate for free. This for me was heaven, I love chocolate......We both spent time looking around the gift shop and bought some chocolate. Following this we went to kuranda, where we have previously visited fora another look around.
After Kuranda, we headed back down to Cairns and spent some time driving around the Northern Beaches that we hadn't yet visited. We stopped at Trinity Beach, and had some dinner there. There was even live rugby being shown, so We got to watch England vs New Zealand.
All in all I had a good day, and I think I may have gained a few pounds with the pie, scones, chocolates and eating out........
