Machu Piccu today...
It was an early start to get the early bus up to the site and be one of the first in for the day. The gates opened at 6AM and we had a short climb up to the top of the site (for the "classic" photo, example above). It was good being one of only about 15 people there and exciting waiting for the mists and clouds to dissappear and machu picchu to uncover itself below us.
And waiting...and waiting...
The clouds wern´t good to us today as it took about 4 hours for the clouds to finally lift (by which time about one million tourists were scrambling over the site). However, was still a very impressive site to see and I enjoyed the wandering around. The way the site gave us glances of itself before finally showing the whole picture was special.
After deciding not to do the 4 days walk to the site (illness, altitude, lazziness) I felt that I should at least walk back down and headed for the small town/village/tourist trap of Aguas Callientes with a Finnish/ozzie couple I had met on the "backpacker train" to get here.
Am pretty knackered now from the early starts (also got a 5.40AM train tomorrow) so am off to get a bit of Kip now. Was a great sight to see today and I think overall it lived up to expectations.
