The guy I´ve been travelling with (Rob from Holland) has left for Cusco now but I have managed to aquire a couple of other travelling companions...
I´ve felt pretty rough for the last two days and turns out I have two types of parasites. Lovely. I´m actually glad to know what´s causing all the problems and hopefully will be able to sort it out with the pills the local doctor gve me.
Since Lima I´ve been through Nazca and took a look at the ´mysterious´lines in the dessert. It seems they were made about 2000 years ago but no-one can work out what they were for. There are simple shapes (trapezoid) and more complex designs such as monkeys and condors. I just climbed up one of the towers to have a look as was feeling rough from food poisoning that day and didn´t fancy the turns and twists on the flight (I met a lot of people who had thrown up on the plane as it makes so many turns in an attempt to see the designs). Not a lot else in Nazca (except for a guide who liked to sing Billy Joel songs at us in the taxi - very strange).
Arequipa is the second city in Peru and just into the Andres (2300M). I quite like the place but have seen a bit more of it than planned. I was due to treck into Colca Cannyon (second deepest in the world) on Saturday but felt ill on the bus so stopped off in a town on the way. I felt no better the next day so came back to Arequpia (via a nasty 4 hour bus journey). In Arequipa we´ve seen the musum where they keep a frozen ´Ice Maiden¨they found at the top of a local volcano about 10 years ago. Turns out she was an Incan girl who had been sacrificed there about 600 years ag but preserved because of the ice (you can still see her skin and fingernails).
Also, I got to experience my first earthquake today. Was only a few seconds long but I was out of the internet cafe pretty sharpish. In hindsight was just a little rumble but will be glad to have no more of them.
Off to see a monestry tomorrow. Should be off to Cusco (where Machu Pichu is) tomorrow night as long as feeling OK.
EDD
p.s. Have mis-spelt Arequipa at the top but unable to change it (oh well).
