Eaton Family's Aussie Adventure
Our timing for VRD was unfortunate as the managers were changing over quite unexpectedly and therefore the atmosphere was rather awkward. It meant that noone really wanted us there, but didn't want to say so. We arrived late on Sunday and left first thing on Tuesday. It was a shame as we had looked forward to experiencing something of life on a big station. However I can say that it is an immaculate station with a never ending water supply and loads of sprinklers running constantly watering acres of lawns around the dozens of workers cottages. It looks clean and professional. We stayed in a little guest cottage and had a lovely time playing with the outgoing manager's kids and their puppies. There were two sets of pups - one lot 2 weeks old (this pic) and the other 8 weeks. The older ones could play a lot better the kids would tell you. A lot of fun was had spending hours chasing the pups. We also took all the bigger pups down to the river crossing and the kids and pups and bigger dogs played rolling down the sand hill whilst the adults (incoming & outgoing manager, overseer and us) had drinks...it was very pleasant. The kids had a ball and of course desperately want a puppy now. At least that is better than a crocodile (which Matthew wants and has decided he will have to wait until he is an adult). The road out from VRD goes through the Jasper Gorge which is a very pretty drive and was a good alternative to passing endless caravans on the Victoria Highway. We had the Buchanan all to ourselves.
