Hi all. Thanks for the messages on our message board - it is great to hear from friends. We are now in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, a posh marina set up for tourists to wander around and drink coffee and shop in boutiques! As you can imagine we are bringing down the tone a bit!
It is a huge contrast to Graciosa which was a real pleasure with its deserted beaches and no cars, although the supermarket was limited and food got a bit repetitive! While there we managed to find a leak in our hydraulic steering, break the cylinder trying to tighten it to stop the leak, took a ferry and long bus journey to the capital on Lanzarote to find a new part, fitted it and got our steering back again - minus the leak! Phew! We were hopeful that that had been the cause of our autopilot malfunction, but alas (and alack and a lot of much stronger words) it came up with the same error on the way from Graciosa to here. It was a 30 mile trip which we did in the company of our friends on Cenou (American cat) and s***akwae (American monohull), involving some motoring, a quick fly of the cruising chute and some foresail sailing (our mainsail is still not repaired).
We have decided that our autopilot is not up to the job, and are investigating fitting a new raymarine one, while we are here.
We are looking forward to my mum and Roy visiting in less than a week now, and will probably not move the boat between now and then.
Ellen and Anna are still smitten with the American girls (9 and 12) and now have trendy hair wraps. John and I are still stressed about the boat not having an autopilot and I have written a long ranting email to Navman about their shoddy product and after sales service.
It is warmer here - Graciosa was very windy so we didn't notice the strength of the sun (although the wind kept the dreaded mosqitos away) and it really doesn't feel like November at all. The girls wrote their Christmas lists the other day - parrot dressing up suits feature on both (??????!!!**!??) as do other odd things! Hopefully I will find one or two of them!
