ITALY - DAY 6
Today everyone went on a bus tour of the city and ended up at the St Peter's Basilica. Since we had already been through we wandered off on our own. We headed back to the Castel San Angelo. We walked down the steps to the river level and wandered along the banks trying to avoid the rubbish and other unmentionables. We would have liked to enter the castle and wander through the museum but time was short so we walked the perimeter before heading back to catch up with the group.
On the way back a huge group of fiat 500 drivers past, honking horns and waving at pedestrians. Some of the cars were beautiful. When we arrived back at the group all the fiats were parked at the Vatican. Next twenty horse and riders came down Via Della Conciliazone the Vatican main street. They parked in Saint Peter's Square and entered the Vatican.
The tour group then ventured forth to the Colosseum. Again we didn't enter as we will be doing a tour of it when we come back from the Splendour tour. We strolled around and saw several other interesting and old monuments before deciding to go and see the pyramid.
When we arrived did we get a surprise. The pyramid was totally encased in scaffolding so we couldn't actually see anything. Instead we looked at Porta San Paolo. It is one of the best preserved Roman city gates. The pyramid was raised during the construction of the Aurelian walls which butts up on either side of the pyramid. It was really weird seeing a pyramid in the heart of Rome.
We had had enough and it was starting to rain so we jumped back on the train, stopped another pick pocket and headed back to our hotel.
