Europe in a Backpack
Scotland, My Land. Ok, so I am in Scotland now, Glasgow that is and it is great, but I will update on that later. First up, I have to tell of my 5 days in Paris. Such a beautiful and romantic city, great to explore by myself. I wandered off my train and made my way to my hostel to toss my bags. The place is called the 3 ducks and is fun but dirty as you can't believe. I checked into my room at the reception/BAR and threw my bags in. Everytime I arrive at a new place I have to do the same game of buying a pint of beer and asking if I can join a table. Being alone makes you meet people. The first night went along nice as I sat in the courtyard telling stories of my travels and meeting everyone. Next thing I know, 12 of us are heading toward the Eiffel Tower with a bottle of wine in hand. Odd group of mexico city girls, guys from toronto, and one guy that had a guitar and could play only Bob Dylan songs, not that I am complaining. By the time we reached the Eiffel Tower, it was about 11 and just getting dark. The park in front of the Eiffel was the gathering place for anything social. As far as you could see were people grouped together with candles lit around them and as much wine, cheese, and bread as you could ever think to consume. The Bob Dylan guy started playing and then was joined by a random bongo player and two other guitar players. All of a sudden our group of 12 turned into 30 people of every race, nationality, and gender. I was talking to a French guy one minute and then a Spanish girl the next. It was an amazing experience. And get this, one of the Mexico City girls came up to me and actually debated that the American Dream doesn't exist. I bit my tongue and sipped my wine not to get into a ridiculous conversation. The night tapered off with the Eiffel doing its usual light show in the backround. I awoke the next morning for a typical French breakfast of a Pastry filled with chocolate and an espresso. Where to go today? To the LOUVRE! Once arriving at the Louvre, sign read "Louvre closed on Tuesday" To VERSAILLES! I hopped on the metro and made my way to the Palace of all Palaces only to be greeted by the longest line I have ever seen in my life. 2 hours later I was wandering through the most beautiful Palace I have ever seen. But the highlight of the trip was when I walked into the Grand Opera Room in the palace with an usher telling everyone to be quiet and several tourist at my side. I sat down in one of the plush seats and threw my Ipod on with some Vivaldi's Four Season's. The tourists were drowning out and I was suddenly alone surrounded by just gold and velvet in the most amazing concert rooms ever built. I made my way outside to find the gardens of Versailles. It felt like I was in the movie the Count of Monte Cristo when he throws the birthday party. I can't describe it because no words could do justice to the view I was looking at. It was a great feeling to walk through the gardens that were so large you would get lost and end up in front of an enormous fountain with no one around, even with so many tourists. My night ended with another trip to the Eiffel and more friends I had made. I didn't hit me that I was in Paris until I was walking down the giant staircase in the tower and I felt very fortunate to be travelling to so many places. I finally made it to the Louvre the next day and waited in the masses to view the Mona Lisa and the Venis de Milo. You kind of feel like cattle being herded around the place. The most impressing thing about the Louvre is not the two famous pieces, but walking into a room and suddenly seeing an enormous painting on the ceiling that makes you stop in your place. I must have stared at this one painting for about 20 minutes.
