G'day Everyone,
Its been pretty much non-stop since we left for Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world too! And Fraser was amazing, everything we wanted and more. We did manage to wake up at 5.30am but I think being really ill the night before helped in a way because I was all tucked up by 8pm. But luckily the morning of Fraser I was feeling much better!!
That morning we had our briefing and were put into groups randomly. We had us boys, a couple of Canadian sorts (Juliette and Kenna), and three frenchies (Aileen, Kim and Dennis). Everyone seemed OK so off we all went off to the Supermarket to purchase some food for the trip. We had to take the ferry over to Fraser and it was up to Me and Nick to drive the 4x4. Now this was a little bit different to the old fiesta back home but Im so glad I did it because it was a great experience. It was like Sega Rally Champs all over again! But this time I had to be responsible for nine other people.
The first day we first visited Lake Mackenzie. This was incredible, just a gorgeous Lake. It gave amazing views and what made this Lake so perfect was that the water was pure and clean so you could even drink it! By this time too our group was bonding great so we even tried to buid a human pyramid. We weren't too successful but it funny as anything trying to pick up Juliet. After we enjoyed Lake Mackenzie, it was time to drive on the beach for the first time. This was insane!! The 4x4 was full to the rafters and so it was an effort just keeping the 4x4 on all fours. But we didnt get stuck once the whole trip...it must have been the awesome driving. Our next job was to find a spot to set up camp for the night. We parked up behind some sand dunes to give us some protection from the wind. But erecting the tents was an almighty struggle. We had the three tents between us and for some reason Me, Milsy and Nick for the life of us couldnt keep our tent upright! Obviously this gave the girls ammunition against us (and we deserved it!) and they didnt disappoint. But karma was about to strike, lets put it that way! Anyway we finally sorted our home for the night out and then it was then time for Milsy to cook up his world famous BBQ. Not bad either! Especially seeing as the lad had to do it under the stars with just a torch to keep him company. As the night continued, we all got to know eachother better and the drinking session began! Between Me, Mils, Nick and Miller we had earlier brought 60 cans of Lager, a bottle of Jim Bean and a bottle of Vodka...
And as the boys back home know, that after a few Im anyones anyway so that much was more than enough. We were all playing some drinking games when it was time for karma to strike. The girls tent had collapsed! You couldnt wipe the smile off us boys faces. It wasn't long before the girls used there feminie charms to worm their way into our well constructed tent. How could you say no? As you can imagine, seven people in a tent built for three/four is a tight squeeze (especially with my ass) but we all had a great time trying! There was Me, Mils, Nick, the Candian Ladies, and the French Ladies. We were in our element and extremely happy campers (mind the pun)! Spooning...what a great idea.
The morning of the second day was another early start, especially with no sleep! First up after loading the 4x4 with the tents and BBQ, we headed to Eli Creek. It was the biggest creek on the Island, and again contained pure water. And if you began from the very top of the creek, the current was strong enough to take me (yes even me!) down to the beach. Awesome. After we dried off, our next stop off was the famous shipwreck..."The Maheno". It was really cool to see. We even decided to have a dance off in front of the shipwreck! Its very funny and I will keep trying to upload the video but for some reason its not happening at the moment. Check out Milsys site, he's got it up! I reckon I took the award for being the most supple and the gong for "best original move" (obviously). Miller's Brent (Office) dance had everyone in stiches. We then drove up to Indian Head which is the tip of the Island and a Cliff top that gives breathtaking views of the Island. Also if your lucky, its here where you can get to see the tiger sharks or even dolphins below. We werent! I thought I saw a fin, but I think the mind was playing tricks on me again. We then headed up further to the Champagne Pools. This was a really cool place to have a dip in the sea and just chill. But honestly I cant get five minutes to myself these days lol. It was time for me to save Nicks life AGAIN! Was just having a little chat in the Pools when I saw a Jellyfish heading for Nick (literally a foot away). Me, Jake and Nick absolutely legged it! After we dusted ourselves and calmed Nick down, we headed back down the beach to meet up with the other 4x4's to set up camp for the night. Luckily the girls volunterred to cook up some pasta for the group. Very nice too. The boys set up the tents and ofcourse the litres upon litres of alcohol made an unexpected appearance (really?). Truth or dare came into play too and me being me opted for a dare. I never learn! I had to get my empty bowl, strowl over to the camp next door, walk right up to them when they were eating altogether, get on my knees and say "Pleas Squire...may I have some more?" Their food looked good too but I got completely mugged and came back empty handed! Sorry guys...at least they had a good time watching me make an idiot out of myself. We were really lucky with our group though because everyone was roughly the same age and had the same sort of interests, which made the whole experience unbeatable. That night too when we were all around the camp fire enjoying eachothers company we saw a shooting star. It was another amazing experience, seeing as I've never seen one before.
On the third and final day with not much sleep again it was another early start. I really am starting to hate tents. Theres just no chance of me getting some shut eye with galing winds outside. We packed up, cleaned up and headed to Lake Wabby. We parked up on the beach and had to walk 2km inland through a rainforest to get there. But it was well worth it...another amazing experience. Its a Lake with a massive steep Sand Hill to the side and looks quality. We had a few races from the very top of the sand hill down to the Lake below. Just another memorable day. There were even catfish in this Lake too which made it even stranger swimming around them. We then grabbed some lunch and started making the trip from the East side of the Island to the West. It was again just like rally driving, amazing. There were certainly some tight turns thrown in there. We arrived back to the ferry port in time for the trip back across. One 4x4 didnt make it back onto the ferry though, it literally broke down ten feet short and they were unable to push it up the hill and on with the other 4x4s. Hows your luck. They will suffer a charge. Obviously they werent fortunate to have two good drivers. Well even one!
When we got back to the hostel, it looked as though we were going to have to say our goodbyes to the group earlier than anticipated. The hostel was fully booked apparantely (why would they lie?). Anywho, Me, Nick and Jakey Boy took the 4x4 back to the workshop so it could be all checked over. When we got there though, we had to wait for the other groups so Mick (an absolute hero) who was the dude who gave us our briefing on the first morning popped into the local bottleshop to sort us boys out with a few cans while we waited. Honestly they never tasted so good! Nothing like a really cold one...especially after all the warm ones we had been drinking the last few days. Anyway, after chatting with Mick and his staff, we discovered that Mick was also the manager of the hostel where we couldnt get a room. He soon sorted that out for us! Straight on the phone. Like I said before what an absolute legend! He sorted us five out with a really nice room (I guess thats what happens when you know the right people in the right places!). It did mean we were able to spend the rest of night with our fraser group. Go Team 1! They'll understand.
The next morning we had a small drive ahead of us. Really!!? It has taken us 11 and a half hours straight to get from Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach. But we're now here and all set ready for our sailing trip round the Whitsunday Islands.
