After Mataranka we visited Katherine, supposedly just for a night, as we were keen to head further north to Litchfield National Park, Kakadu and Darwin. However, the morning we were due to leave, the Navvy had other ideas about our itinerary...
A strange clunking and squeaking noise was coming from under the bonnet. After our strategy of ignoring it failed to make it go away, we decided it was best to call for roadside assistance. The mechanic who came to look at it couldn't give us a definitive answer but warned against driving the Navvy any distance, instead we should wait til Monday and see a local mechanic.
Monday came, the Nissan mechanic was too busy to see us, so we got in to see another guy down the road. After a few hours he deemed the problem to be something completely different to what the roadside guy suggested, and something he was unable to fix. "Don't drive it anywhere, take it to the Nissan guy down the road". Hmm.
Nissan guy couldn't see us for 10 days, the thought of hanging around Katherine without transport for that long was unattractive to say the least, so we decided to call NRMA for H-E-L-P. And help they did. We were on a tow truck to Darwin at 7am the next morning, they got us accommodation and the last hire care available in town. We calculated that they spent $1300 on us in 2 days, the tow alone would have cost us $900.
The Nissan place in Darwin was fantastic too, they diagnosed the problem (a bung tensioner on the drive belt) and had the car back to us in 24 hours.
So despite an unauspicious arrival, things are looking up in Darwin. Now its time to be tourists!
