We took off down the Stuart Hwy and headed off to the famous National Parks of the NT - Litchfield and Kakadu. First night we spent on the west coast at a lovely place called Dundee Beach, supposed to be a decent fishing spot but the midgies drove us spare, so we set off the next morning for Litchfield.
We hit Wangi Falls and couldn't wait to get our swimmers on, it is an awesome spot with a nice little camp site and an even better swimming hole. Very touristy but who gives a toss when you're roasting in the midday sun and there's crystal clear water and refreshing waterfalls to cool ya down, did I mention it was hot!!
Next stop Buley Rockholes. Buley is a series of small cascading water holes that are quite deep and ever so refreshing. While we were swimming Lea ran into an old colleague from her Waste Service days, Garry Leggett, who was up this way on holidays with his wife. What a small world.
We spent the night at the nearby camp ground where Lea whipped up a storm on the campfire, I can't remember the main meal for the dessert! Camp oven cooked bread with lashings of butter and golden syrup, mmm. We were woken later in the night by a dingo picking disgarded chop bones from our camp fire left there by the previous people, the large dingo was very visible with a near full moon. Another night Lea was thankful for the camper and that dogs can't climb ladders!
The following day we spent the morning at Florence Falls, another insanely beautiful waterfall and pool. Lee spent the entire time with his goggles on chasing the schools of sooty grunter (black bream) around the pool. Conversely, Lea spent the entire time trying to swim away from the same sooty grunter, which were biting at the midgie scabs on her legs.
Around lunch the busloads of tourists turned up so we headed for the Douglas Daly van park for the night. We checked out the Douglas hot springs the next morning, which have well and truly earnt their name, man were they hot!
Off to Pine Creek for essential supplies then onto the world famous Kakadu!
