Ok, Kakadu.
We'd been hearing how nice the place is and we both kinda expected to be a tiny bit disappointed due to all the hype, but man does this place rock!! A big thanks to Brooksie for some "all time tips" on Kakadu, cheers mate!
We headed for a place called Gunlom Falls, some 40kms of dirt road which sees you arrive at a waterfall and deepwater swimming hole. That evening we were treated to a fantastic slideshow on bush tucker by Ranger Bessy, who's sister is also called Bessy (go figure?). All the traditional Aboriginal treats were shown in full colour, some with their innards spread all over the floor. We wondered what the non-English-speaking tourists present at the slideshow thought of the rather graphic photos?!) All this was free, it seems most of the campgrounds have a free slide show of some description nearly every night. NSW national parks should take note!
The following morning we did the walk to the top of the falls, some 100+ metres straight up to a series of small waterfalls and swimming holes and a fantastic view over the valley.
Next stop was Cooinda, we stayed at the van park and made use of their pool and bar/bistro, and ran into our new friends Matt and Bree, who we'd met in Darwin.
Staying at Cooinda also made it easier for the 6:45am (yes "am") cruise of the Yellow Waters billabong the next morning. Within the first 5 minutes, we rounded a bend to see a 4.5m croc cruising straight at us, then the guide drove the boat right alongside him for the next 5 mins for us all to get some amazing pics. He was so close that Lea could have touched the thing, if she had've goten off Lee's lap that is. Many more were sighted, one bigger again, also hundreds of birds and other wetland creatures which all played a part in our amazing wildlife morning.
The day was finished with some ancient aboriginal culture, the rock art of Ubirr. We caught a free talk explaining the main rock art gallery and then followed it up with another free talk on the wetlands, which finished just before another wicked sunset over another gorgeous part of Kakadu. This place just keeps getting better.
Spent a night at Jabiru then headed out of Kakadu, vowing to return on the next trip!
