Sunday 4th Feb- My friend and I caught the ferry to Watsons bay. It was a nice sunny day and we were only going over to have fish and chips for lunch. I had been here before when i first arrived in Sydney. I had calamari and chips and was as good as last time and i didnt get attacked by any seagulls this time. After we had finished our lunch we went for a walk along the cliffs (South Head). From here there are views back across to the city, of North Head and the rest of the north part of the harbour. Lianne had to leave to get the ferry so i carried on walking and went to the lighthouse and the lighthouse keepers cottage. After i this i caught the ferry back to the city and decided to make the most of my daytripper ticket and caught the bus to Bondi. There was a market on today so i walked around here. Despite there being some nice stuff i didnt buy anything. Later i sat on the grass near the beach for a while. There was no surf today, the surfers just seemed to be sat on their boards wating for a wave!
Monday 5th - This afternoon i walked down to Balmoral Beach. This is a nice quiet beach with locals rather than backpackers on it. There is also no surf so its perfectly safe to go swimming in. THere were a few people swimming in the sea including some little kids and older people. I decided to go in for a swim. Then i felt a sting on my wrist and leg and looked down to see a jellyfish and it tenticles floating on the water. THis made me get out as fast as possible! Luckily this type of jellyfish isnt fatal and are quite common in the waters around Sydney. IT was quite a painful sting. I decided to leave after this and go and check with a pharmacist that i wasnt about to die!! She said ill be fine, and can take some painkillers for the pain. The pain went after an hour or so and the mark soom went down. Thats my third accident so im hoping ill be safe for my last few weeks! ALthough sharks have been spotted along the south coast of Sydney!!
Tuesday 6th - Today i went to Richmond and Windsor which are small country towns in the Hawkesbury Valley area and is about 1 1/2 hrs on the train froim Sydney. Its still counted as part of the Sydney area. These are towns that have old houses and buildings from the 1850s onwards. Richmond is smaller than Windsor. Richmond has small lagoon where there were ducks and birds etc in and cows in the fields next to it. The houses are all privatley owned so i couldnt go inside any. After walking around Richmond i caught the train tio Windors which was only 10mins away. I walked down to the Hawkesbury River and had my lunch here. It was very hot and humid so needed to find some shade. After walking along the river for a while i went to the Hawkesbury area museum. THis is inside one of the old houses. THe displays were quite old (the are building a brand new building behind the house for the new museum) the displays covered the history of the area, including a massive flood that occured and the RAF base in Richmond. IT was interesting. THen i walked around the old houses, cottages, buildings and churches. The rectory is the oldest one in Australia. I went isnde the church that was built in 1820's. It took me a few hours to walk around this little town. Then i made my way back to the city. It was nice to be in the country again and made a change from the city and beaches!
Wed 7th - This morning i caught the bus to Manly and from there another bus along to North HEad which is only a few minutes along the road. This area is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. I walked along here to the end of North Head and along the walkway which went around the cliff. From here i could see the Pacific ocean, the city, and South head (Watsons bay) and the lighthouse i was at on sunday. After walking around here and having my lunch i went in the National Artillery Museum. North Head was used during the WW1 ans 2 and can see the areas where the canonons etc where. I had to go on a guided tour around the area as it included the tunnels and ammunition stores etc. I was the only one on this tour. The guide did scare me a bit as he told me to keep an eye out for snakes when we were walking along the memorial path and down in the tunnels. Fortunatly we didnt see any. THe tour was interesting and it was good that the tunnels etc were still accessible. It took an hour to walk around then half an hour in the exhibition room. Luckily i managed to walk back to the bus shelter just before the rain and thunderstorms!!!
Sat 10th - Today i walked down to Kirribilli and went to the North Sydney olympic pool. THis opened in the 1930s and is an icon of Sydney. It is right next to the Luna Park and Harbour bridge so its not a bad view either way!! it is an outdoor pool and the sun was shining so it was nice. after doing my lenghts here i walked a bit around Kirribilli and enjoyed the views and sun before stuggling up the hills to walk home!!
Sun 11th - Today there was a Chinese New Year Parade, along george street in the city, so i went in to check that out. The parade lasted about an hour. Some of tghe groupd were just walking along, so they were a bit boring but there were lots of dragons and dancers etc so made it more interesting. Then i went to belmore park which had some entertainment and chinese food stalls so had some chinese for lunch! then i went to the quay to watch the cricket on the big screen. But i left there at 4pm as is startedc to rain. The rain and the thunder continued on and off all night but England still one the match and the tournament!!
