Travelling back through Pennsylvania was largely through forests on either side of the highway, with occaasional fields & towns. There are a tremendous amount of trees in that area, but once we reached the Delaware Water Gap & crossed the Delaware River into New Jersey, the scenery gradually changed & became more urbanised, although still with a large number of trees. The nearer we got to New York City, the heavier the traffic became, although fortunately most of it was travelling in the opposite direction to us. We had intended to call in at my cousin Suzanne's on the way back, but unfortunately one of their dogs died yesterday so it wasn't a good time to visit.
We didn't take any photographs yesterday, but I did capture some of the birds here today. There is a Woodpecker which is a regular visitor, but also a wild Turkey with chicks, which is a rarity that David & Lesley have never seen before.
Just a few more days here now before we fly home next week & then it'll be back down to earth with a bump. So some 5,000 odd miles later we have visited 17 States & seen some remarkable sights that we shall never forget.
David & Lesley have a Chevrolet Volt which Lesley normally uses for her daily commute to work. This is a hybrid electric car which has a petrol (gas) engine, which can re-charge the battery, but for most shorter commutes uses battery power alone. Unlike the Toyota Prius, the Volt can be re-charged from mains power. Today I got to drive it for the first time. It is almost completely silent but has very rapid acceleration. I looked down at the speedometer & was amazed to see 66 mph. As the drive is electric there are no gears or gear changes & progress is very smooth indeed. This is one of the first ones made (from the VIN number I reckon the 838th) so time will tell how reliable it will be. Dave has it on a 3 year lease so hopefully it will be reliable for that time, as it's always a little worrying being one of the first with new technology. Dave delights in the fact that so far this year (from January) he has only filled it with petrol (gas) twice, as it is re-charged from the mains every day. Dave estimates the electricity cost is about a quarter of the equivalent cost of petrol.
Mileage yesterday 284. Total (this car) 755. Total (all three cars) 5047.
