Today was another brilliant day. We had to go North to pick up Route 88 & then South on Route 395 on the other side of the Rockies. The Carson Pass on Route 88 peaks at 8573 feet & we went over several other passes at over 8,000 feet. Despite this & the obvious damage from the winter weather & snowploughs the roads were in very good condition & some of the blacktop is remarkably smooth. We saw a lot of snow & warnings not to stop due to the possibility of avalanches & some of the roadside snow banks looked as if they could easily fall. They had 16" of snow up there on Wednesday. During the journey we discovered that the Sonora pass had been opened today, which would have given us a shorter journey had we known.
The views are difficult to describe & photos don't do them justice either. Many years ago I described Scotland as "just like Wales but there's a helluva lot more of it". Well I could describe the Rockies (& we've only seen a small part so far) as just like Scotland but THERE'S A HELLAVA LOT MORE OF IT. We also passed Mono Lake, a huge salt lake.
We are at Mammoth Lakes, a ski & snowboarding resort. It is quite cold as we are at almost 8,000 feet, so we have put the heating on in our room. Tomorrow we travel through Las Vegas on our way to the Grand Canyon. From what we see it will be a LOT warmer there.
Mileage today 237. Total (white car) 704. Total 1,235.
