Highway 50, through Nevada, is said to be America's loneliest road. Certainly you drive 70 to 100 miles between small towns, with not a sign of habitation in between. More interesting was the two-part "Baker Experience". The store there offered coffee and we minded the shop while the owner went out back to brew it for us. While she was away we could easily have dumped the whole store contents in the boot of the car and made off - 2 packets of soup here, a can of beans there and the things you don't expect, like a 72 hour survival candle. But the coffee was very welcome. As for the self-service gas station, read a chunk of metal at the roadside. Thank goodness a lone biker came along and told us to squint in the blazing sun to read a small display, then swipe our card a few times until some dots appear on the display ("that's a good sign") and, eventually, the metal sentinel gurgled into life and we got enough juice to get us to our overnight stop.
Then on to South Lake Tahoe, via the summit of Mt Rose. As a 10 to 11 mile hike it was pretty average. What we didn't know when we set out was that there was a gentle breeze blowing. We saw no craft on Lake Tahoe, where it was gusting 40mph and the white horses were more reminiscent of a stormy sea. Approaching the summit of our climb the wind was blowing at 70 to 80mph and staying upright was the prime concern. We were glad to get back down to tree level. Now, does anyone know of a Mt Bollier?
And apologies the cover photo insists I adopt a horizontal position. Must be something to do with the strong winds - in sympathy with recent UK weather, but without the rain.
