Woke up today at the crack of dawn (well 10:30 really) headed off to a Sunday food market at the other end of the island. Food markets in the UK are full of unusual stalls selling strange foreign food that looks and smells delicious, it's the same here but of course foreign food here is more likely German or English. So it was with some disappointment to trawled the stalls looking at hot dogs with different toppings, bagels, quiches, roasted pork knuckle with sauerkraut and to Yvonne's total disappointment Brussel Sprouts; doesn't like them at Christmas at home and a different location has not altered her view that BS is the vegetable of the devil.
Took a walk into Hong Kong park and botanical gardens. Watched monkeys swinging in the trees all be it caged (shame) then a look around the greenhouse housing what we assumed were rare plants but again basically had British house plants and the greenhouse had aircon to keep the temperature down. All the locals taking selfies with a daffodil back drop.
It's a bank holiday here as well and under most flyovers, Philippino house staff were playing cards, having picnics and generally having a good time all behind low level wind breaks made from cardboard. A local had told us to avoid this area as it was not considered not a good look for trendy HK but we were reminded of our childhood hunkered down on the sea front on bank holiday.
Late afternoon had us in Lan Kwai Fong. A street of bars the best bit of which was how to reach it. Almost all of HK (as the locals say) is on a steep slope so avoiding a slope or using an escalator is a sport we are becoming proficient at. On our way we sat half way up watching everyone huff and puff. We did too when we got the drinks bill. Two for one the lady shouted so we asked for the two and four arrived with the bill, will we ever learn?
Rounded the night off at a Chinese bbq restaurant with a Michelin guide recommendation. Delicious and cheap but not what you assume as it was basically a greasy spoon. Beers from the corner shop for David as we were rather tired.
