Dave's Travels
Hi Everyone
Apologies for the delay in a journal entry but I've been a bit busy the last couple of weeks!
After spending a few days in Krabi, we went for a night on Ko Phi Phi, and island just off Western Thailand - where they filmed "The Beach". The Island was really nice but we only stayed a night as we had organised to make the long trip south to Georgetown Malaysia the next day.
To get to Georgetown we had to get a boat back to the mainland at 7 and then endure the longest craziest mini bus journey of my life. Apparently in Thailand the rules of the road are to overtake regardless of what is coming and hope for the best. Boy was I relieved to see the border of Malaysia spring up on the horizon! Getting across the border was suprisingly easy and arriving in Malaysia it was a pleasent suprise to see they not only had road markings but also a dual carriageway. No more oncoming traffic! We eventually got into Georgetown around 11 at night and collapsed in bed for a well earned rest.
We spent three days exploring Georgetown - which could be done on foot! Seeing lots of lovely historic and cultural things in about 40 degrees was a pleasure, as was being woken up every morning at 5 by the call to prayer from the mosque over the road. After exhausting ourselves in Georgetown we got the over night train to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. We decided to only spend a day in the place as Gemma wanted to spend May 1st in Singapore as it was her birthday, that's right "Happy Birthday Gemma"! So we had just enough time to realise that, aside from the two huge great big towers dominating the horizon, KL is pretty much like any other asian city - humid and busy. Obviously we trecked up said towers and marvelled at the foggy view across the generic cityscape in front. After that we went to the cinema - big mistake!
Apparently censorship is quite a big issue in Malaysia. The government pretty much cuts all the interesting parts of films: the fighting, kissing, swearing and any scenes that encourage "Free Thought". So we stumbled out of the cinema an hour later having watched a badly edited version of "The Hills have eyes". It may have been scary but I couldn't say as every time it got good it was cut!
The next day we headed by train to Singapore, the land of the shopping mall. Here we checked into the cheapest hostel around, which was more expensive than our last three weeks accomodation put together and settled back into the familiar sense of being overcharged for everything. We spent G's big day at Sentosa Island, a theme park and had a nice time window shopping for three days. We then flew to Bali aboard mad Aussie Airlines on Wednesday 3rd.
Aussie Airlines is mad because it only shows Japanese game shows in flight, even though 90% of the passengers are english speaking and the other 10% German. Plus they only serve veggie onboard "Meals", Idiots.
So here we find ourselves now back on the beaches in beautiful Bali. Think I'm going to go have a swim.
Take Care
Dave
