Dave's Travels
Hi Everyone
Once again it has been a bit of busy few weeks so my apologies for the length of this entry as I've got a lot to cover!
We spent a week in lovely sun soaked Bali mostly relaxing by the pool and eating. One day we took a tour around the island which is about 40 miles wide and visited some really nice Hindu temples and natural springs (these weren't Hindu). We spent a day at Water Bomb the island's water park which was half empty, as since the bombings last year tourist numbers have halved - bad news for the Balinese, good news for me and Gemma!
Subsequently every single stall owner and restauranteer was after our business and trying every little trick in the book to get us to buy any piece of tat from them. Had a bit of a nightmare as I managed to block BOTH of my ears with water - quite a reat and spent a couple of deaf days annoying Gemma until we both decided I should investigate the Balinese Health Service - turns out it's quite efficient so long as you've got the readies, so $90 and ten minutes work later I could once again hear the dulcit tones of the street venders. I think it's the only time I've been in a doctors and they've asked me what they should do next, but credit where it is due they sorted me out!!
Then on May 10th we had to face up to enduring the trip from hell - 20 hours worth of travelling to get to Cairns northern Queensland on my favourite Australian airlines. Cairns is only about four hours flight from Bali but as we were on a budget, apparently, it's cheaper to fly via Melbourne - a bit like flying London to Rome via Moscow. So we past over Cairns about half three in the morning changed at Melbourne at half six and finally arrived exhausted at 1pm.
Spent a couple of days in rainy Cairns enjoying speaking english to people and the fact that people didn't drive like maniacs. For those who are really interested we went to the Art Gallery (for a bit of culture), a thing called "Reef Teach" and had plenty of pizzas and fish and chips. It was a bit hard to deal with having to pay normal prices again though, after being used to paying at most a fiver for a meal for the past five weeks.
We decided to travel from Cairns to Sydney in a campervan so we hired one from a company called Wicked campers, ours is called Mick Jagger, and if you look at the pictures you'll see why! We spent a night in the Atherton Tablelands - I think named after Michael Atherton for his services to Australian Cricket (cricket banter!). This was pretty nice as it was dense tropical rainforest but as the name suggests it was a little wet. Somehow I managed to get a leech attached to my foot which was rank. Then we spent a few days driving along the coast through Beef Country which was pretty uneventful - plenty of long distance driving as it's about 3000km from Cairns to Sydney. Didn't quite appreciate how far that was until we've only driven 1000km in a week and am knackered!
Stopped at a place called Airley Beach and spend a day snorkelling out on the Great Barrier Reef - which was nice, but a little cold. The sea's a lot different 30km out, i.e. freezing cold and really rough, but it was nice to see all the coral and fish not in an aquarium. So now we are camping about 300km north of Brisbane enjoying the warm weather and deciding what to do next. Oh yeah got up at bloomin 4am to sit in a little shed in the middle of the bush in the freezing cold to watch Arsenal lose - was all on my own and not happy!
Anyway onwards and upwards
Take Care
Dave
