Lets take this gig global!!
Hey hey folks,
Well I have spent the last week in Rainbow Beach and it has been one of the best weeks of my trip so far!! The main reason being legendary Fraser Island! Trust me, it certainly didnt dissapoint!
I travelled up with the Irish lass, Jenny (who I met in Surfers and Noosa) and met a group of Canadians on the bus. They were all booked in for the same day so after some sweet talking to the tour operator here I managed to get myself into their group! We had an absolute blast!
Its all self orienteered to you just pack up your 4x4 and pile in the back with the tunes pumping and do and go wherever you want. The first day we had a quick visit to Lake Mckenzie but were a little pushed for time as we had to get to camp before the sun went down. It was a fair bit of driving on the first day and it all takes longer than you imagine due to the extremely bumpy and sandy roads. The stretch of coast on the east is just over 75 miles of pristine beaches and the beach is basically the highway on the island and it was so much fun rocketing down the beach at 80-90 km/hr!!
We met up with some other groups to camp and once the food was sorted everyone hit the goon and a massive night was had by all! I ended up sleeping outside in the end, under the stars as it was pretty warm. Man, I have never seen stars like 'em. So clear that you could just pluck them out the sky and you can clearly see all the galaxies aswell. The shooting stars were my highlight, unbeleivable as they trail across the sky like a firework or something!
The second day we headed to the beautiful Eli creek where you can walk upstream a fair way and then float/swim all the way back down the creek out to the ocean! Next up was the Maheno shipwreck which was really impressive and then onto the Rainbow cliffs (which look like giant termite mounds). We spent most of the arvo right up the north of the island at Indian head. Had lunch and then walked to the Champagne pools. Pretty nipps in the water but they are bascially pools right behind a rocky bar and every time a wave comes crashing in, the water spills/bubbles over and gives a real jacuzzi effect. Pretty sweet!! Theres also a lookout at the tip of Indian head where you gaze down the sheer drop and watch the marine life go to work below. We saw sharks, dolphins, big rays and even a turtle which kept popping his head up to say hello!! cute little fella!
Back at another camp on the beach we had a big game of footy then partied the night away until the wee hours. A brilliant night! The final day we were up early and all a little groggy but we managed to head off early doors and phone the tour guys to ask if we could come back later instead of the noon ferry. Luckily Jenny's smooth Irish twang did the trick and we had all day left! So after a quick detour to Lake Wabby we hit Mckenzie again for a couple of hours. This is easily the most beautiful thing I have seen on my trip so far! and the one place which actually looks better than all the postcards and photos and pictures of it in your head. A real paradise for sure!! I didnt want to leave!!
We had to tear ourselves away tho and step on it as we only had 2 1/2 hours to get back for the last ferry at 5:30pm. After some speedy driving and few hours of getting your ass pounded and thrown around the back of a 4x4 we fianlly made it out to the beach and man were we lucky!! Seriously lucky! Turns out that the last ferry was actually 5pm and we cruised out at 5:10pm. The ferry was on its way back to land but saw us driving on the beach and came back for us!! Thank God! If we were just 2 minutes later they wouldnt have seen us and we would have had to stay another night, get a massive fine and had just an orange and 2 eggs between the 11 of us!! So someone up there was good to us that day!!
It all worked out sweet tho and at least we squeezed every possible second on the island. Fraser is just the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Unbelievable!
The only downer for me was that I got my photos on cd before I left and they wiped my memory card and I didnt realise I had to re-format it! So took all my pictures then it filled up and when I worked out the problem I had to lose all my amazing photos!! Completely gutted!! Im gonna have to get them off the rest of the guys which is a shame as I had some belters in there! :-(
We got back on Saturday and have stayed here until today just chilling really. Im off to Town 1770 tonight for a few relaxing days and hopfully some cheap days as its been a fairly expensive couple of weeks what with my Evergaldes and Fraser trips. Ive heard really good things about 1770 tho so looking forward to it.
Anyways I better go, im pretty upto date now so will check in again in a few days with my latest news.
Take it easy peeps,
Dan
