Lets take this gig global!!
Kia Orana folks,
A big yodondo from the Cook Islands!!! The sun soaked fun hasnt quite stopped yet as I have just spent the past 10 days in the Cooks. Due to money and time restrictions I only stayed on the main island of Rarotonga but it was still sweet nonetheless. Rarotonga is the largest island in the Cooks and a fringe island so its only 32km all the way around and protected by an outer reef so its bascially a never ending white beach and bath tub clear lagoon all the way!!
Its a very different way of life here to Fiji and although fairly basic, people are content and judging by the size of most of them, they're not exactly hungry!! I was staying at a place called Varas beachside but was based up on the hillside apartment which turned out to be perfect. It was away from all the noise and hoards of people down at the beach and perched nicely among lush green gardens with a spectacular view of the reef in front. With just three rooms and an open-plan kitchen/lounge it was basically like our own little home. Everyone got on really well and we had an absolute blast. Kinda felt like Uni life again except with all the palm trees and beaches included! Sweet!
The weather wasnt as consistent as Fiji and it could change from clear blue skies to tropical rain in an instant but out of 10 days it was pretty good for most of them so I cant really complain. Again, life is pretty damn laid back in these sorts of places and it was 110% relaxation for the most part. Days were spent on the beach, playing volleyball, snorkelling, kayaking, or just chilling in a hammock sipping 60% proof Fijian Rum!!! Happy days! We did do a few road trips aswell, including a couple of days on nearby islands which you can swim/kayak to and also hired scooters and burnt round the island in a 'hells angels' like convoy stopping off at all the nicest spots. We wanted to do the cross-island walk aswell but it was far too hot to be trekking for 4 hours across steep bug infested jungle so never got round to it in the end! Relaxing on the beach seemed like a much easier option!
Once again, the local people were amazingly genuine and friendly and would strike up a conversation at every opportunity. They are suprisingly knowledgeable about current affairs aswell which is kinda strange considering their size and location. The Cooks are pretty much the furthest point away from home that I have been on my trip and yet they knew all the latest on whats up in the UK which made me feel pretty stupid at times!!
So yeah, another amazing couple of weeks and a place that I would defo return to at some point. The way of life is pure bliss!!!
Next stop is the big 'ol US of A and the craziness of LA so got kinda mixed emotions about that at the moment!
Check in soon to see how its going!
