Lets take this gig global!!
Hi there guys,
How we all doing? First and foremost you'll be pleased to know that I have slapped on a ton of new pictures which you can check out in the 'My photos' section, imaginatively titled Ozzie pics 2 and 3!! Have a gander, there are some beauties in there!!
Anyways, since my last update I have moved on from Mission Beach. I actually left a day early in the end as I was fairly bored there during the daytime. It was nice to relax but two days of doing absolutely b***** all was enough for me so i headed to Cairns on Monday night to get a little more active.
I managed to blag the last available bed at a hostel which was recommended to me (Caravella 149) and its a nice place so have been based there all week. Have a sound English and Irish contingent in my room so spent a fair bit of time with them which is cool. The first night I just dumped my bags then went straight out to watch the footy. Theres loads of good places to watch it here and the atmosphere is quality as you can imagine with loads of mixed nationalities, the banter is always flying! So it wasnt until Tuesday that I got to have a proper look around the most northern city in Queensland - Cairns.
Its a nice place here. Again its got that ozzie "city but not a city" feel to it which I like. Its clean and modern and I have really enjoyed my time here so far. Soo....what have I actually been upto??
Well, for the first couple of days it was football by night and sleep by day before a lazy stroll around town. Finally there was a break from the footy on wed/thurs so I could get fully involved. I checked out the beautiful Esplanade, the lagoon and the Marina area. Went to the Peter Lik Photography gallery which was really impressive. He does most of the "posh" postcards and pictures you'll find in Australia and was a real inspiration to see a more "complete" aspect of his work. Really talented guy. I also visited the City Art Gallery which wasnt the best Ive been to so far but was still ok and lots of Aborignal art which I love at the moment so enjoyed that part. Went to the cinema on wednesday night to see X-MEN 3 which was pretty good and my first trip to the flicks for ages!
Other than that I just chilled on the esplanade and soaked up the atmosphere over a coffee and chat at the many cafes/bars around town. Its a really friendly city here and the place where most people either start or end their time in Oz so everywhere you go you see familiar faces and I've bumped into soooo many peeps which I have met along the way, so its great to catch up with them all.
Yesterday I went on the Uncle Brains tour of the Atherton Tablelands which was a quality day out! A packed day full of jokes, singing, AMAZING scenery and lots and lots of swimming which was cool. Some of the highlights (other than the great food and company throughout the day!) were the Josephene Falls (three waterfalls each rolling into the other), the Curtain Fig tree (you'll have to see the pictures to believe it) and the Platypus spotting. We had to wait about half an hour sitting in dead silence but eventually saw two of them, happily getting their evening meals in....worms and snails, MMmmm!! They're pretty cute little things tho and another 'Only in Oz' animal Ive now seen in the wild. Sweet!
However the best part of the day for me was the Mila mila falls. Absolutely beautiful. Its a 30 ft waterfall into a perfect little pool surrounded by lush, colourful vegetation. It was so nice it was almost unreal, like it was man made for a Hollywood film set or something. Rainbow and all!! You can swim in the pools and go right under and behind the falls to really experience the power of the waterfall. Best massage Ive had in ages!! Its also where 'that' Timote hair shampoo advert was filmed where she does the famous flick of the hair with the waterfall in the background so was pretty funny getting photos of all the girls taking it in turn to try and recreate it!
So a great day out on the whole. More footy last night then today has been a belter weather wise so we all headed to the Lagoon to soak up the rays and take in the live didge, guitar music and weekend markets. Happy Days I'll tell ya!!
We are having a BBQ tonight before downing a few at a mates house party and heading out to watch the England game. Man I am nervous!! Come on lads!
So thats pretty much most of my news. Im gonna try and get upto Cape tribulation on Monday for a couple of days so will let you know how that goes.
But for now, sing loud for England and enjoy the pictures!!
Laters, Dan
PS: COME ON LADS!!!!!!!
