Lets take this gig global!!
Alrighty folks!
well, the first bit of good news is that I have FINALLY managed to get my Thailand pics and some oz ones too up on this site so check them out and enjoy! It was darn near impossible to choose which ones to put on as I've got soooo many good ones of Thailand so its just a wee sample. Expect a full slideshow when I get back (but I have to warn you, it could take it a few hours!)
Another bit of admin is an apology for the real boring, pointless last update which I posted. I've just re-read it and its pretty lame. I think I must have been in a bad mood after listening to all the (for want of a harsher word) 'idiots' at the Arts Factory. But do not despair as since I moved over to my new hostel (the Main Beach Backpackers) I have had a blast and am loving it here in Byron Bay.
Its just my ideal paradise and (although theres probs less job opportunities) its overtaken Melbourne in my 'places to live' table!- No. 1 for sure!
I love everything here - The small, chilled out town, the beach (es), the surf, the weather, the hostel and the people are pretty damn sound aswell!
I've been here for a week now and am staying for another as I've got loads of time to get up the coast and am just enjoying it so much! where else can you be queing in a supermarket and listen to two 50+ dads (one in a suit and tie and one in thongs and boardies) talking about how good the surf was this morning and how to "take it easy and see you back at the Pass at 6 am tomo morning!!" Its just brilliant.
So, anyway enough babble, what news I hear you ask......
well, to be fair there isnt all that much really as most days are spent chilling on the beach and regaining my tan which has faded considerably over the past 3 chilly weeks in Oz. You'll be glad to hear that its pretty much back to its best now!!!!!
I have done some stuff tho.
Went out last weekend with a couple of Ozzie guys and two Irish girls which was a good night and will try and hook up with Dave and Phil when I pass through Surfers Paradise next week.
Walked to the famous lighthouse (twice now) and checked out the immense view from the most eastern point of Australia and the unbelievable sunsets which they have everyday here in Byron.
It was the Nimbin Mardi Grass festival on the weekend aswell which was an awesome day out and pretty crazy. Loads of people, mostly hippies, lots of singing and dancing and lots and lots of weed going around! In case you didnt know, basically, Nimbin is a small village near Byron which became a hippie mecca in the early 70's in rebellion against the American war in Vietnam. So many hippies were turning up that the police couldnt control the drug taking so basically turned a'blind' eye to it. It has continued to be the hippie haven of Oz (if not the world!) ever since and there are over a dozen 'communities' which live and survive in and around Nimbin in small huts and tree houses. Some even have thier own schools and even currency (the Nimlet) which is prety funny. So yeah, it was a pretty hazy but enjoyable day for all!
I checked out the market yesterday which was sweet and had loads of cheap, cool stuff on offer most of which I managed to avoid purchasing and instead spent most of the morning checking out the quality live bands performing everything from Blues to funk to folk music and everything inbetween. Live music is available everyday and night here -just another reason to love this place!
Uummm, Im starting to struggle now. Nothing else stands out just yet but its basically waking up early, doing some exercise (run or swim or surf), chilling on the beach most of the day, then relaxing or hitting the Goon in the evenings. Life is sweet, real sweet!
Oh, another bonus was meeting up with Lucy for the past few days which was wicked. Big up the Nomad crew!!
Anyways, my time is running out and I cant really think of much else to say. Im off to do some shopping in Woolworths now (but dont worry mum, im not living off Pick n' mix, Woolworths here is a supermarket chain!!)
before cruising back to the beach to watch the sunset.
Im here all week, so will update again soon.
Laters y'all, Dan
PS: oh yeah, a girl i knew from uni checked into my hostel yesterday aswell! How crazy is that? I havent seen her for two years! Mental
