Magnetic Island...
After a week of tiring events, we were very much looking forward to chilling out on magnetic island, and it was pretty much this apart from being a short stay. Off the Greyhound we arrived at Townsville, which i imagined to be a 'cowboy' town with little people around however it was quite the opposite. It was quite a built up town with many commercial food places and shops, and a gorgeous harbour which takes you over to Magnetic Island. Magnetic Island was also very different to what i expected, there was little there at all but this feature i liked - quiet remote island. You could drive from one end of the island to the other in 20 minutes - very very small island but gorgeous.
Our hostel we were staying out was pretty cool, the only hostel in the area situated on the edge of the beach looking over the sea. Gorgeous views! The bar area was spacious and you could sit eating your dinner and breakfast watching the boats go by. How posh! The hostel wasnt like some of the dumps we have stayed in, it was more like hotel really. The rooms were basic and you had communial shower but the layout with the pool, open bar, music, food was very decent! The meals there was great value for money - i had a barramundi fish with wedges and salad for $10. What a bargain! and the following night an all you can eat barby for again $10. We abused this!
We only had one full day at magnetic island so us guys, the brommy lads, and a guy from newcastle hired out what looked like Barbie Cars. Bright pink and white, roof top min cars which you had to climb in too. This was so much fun! We were provided with a map of the island where you should sightsee, and i think we nearly accomplished everything. We went to a gorgeous waterfall, and chilled out in the pools which the sun glazed over, whilst the lads bombed into off the rope swings. Afterwards we left the boys at the Koala Sanctuary as we had already done all this in Noosa. We got to have a blast in the cars ourselves!
We enjoyed crusing around in the cars whilst catching a sun tan - the weather was scorching. We saw some gorgeous views up on the hills, sunbathed at a couple of beaches and had a walk along a street of shops and bars which looked on to a harbour. We found this was a bit strange at first as it was only me and sophie about, and one guy sat in the only bar open on the road. Bit like a cowboy scene, haha. We thought something had happened that we didnt know about until we got informed it was a sunday, and everything was shut! After mine and Sophies eventful trip around the Island, we went back to the Koala Sanctuary early as there was a bird feeding show of Rainbow Lorikeets.
One of the tour guides brought out lots of soaked bread for the public to use to feed the birds. They were crazy little things landing everywhere all over you. I felt like bird woman! One of the guys decided to put the food (ew!) on his head, hands, arms and sit with the feeding dish. He got seriously attacked by the birds with about 50 of them landing on him! Some really cool photographs from this. Me and Sophie both sort of wish we had gone with the lads on the koala tour as they got to hold crocodiles, different reptiles, snakes etc which we didn't get to do in Brisbane. Some of the pictures were awesome which they showed us, however im not sure i would of let a snake sit on my neck or a crocodile on my lap! hmm. A couple we knew who were travelling with the brummy lads were staying at Koala Sanctuary resort as they had accomodation there too which attached to it. It looked really cool with little log cabins, and a pool surrounded by wildlife however they did say they came across some big bugs and creatures on an evening!
I thought magnetic Island was a really cool Island and different to everywhere else we have visited. I would recommend people to go stay on the island for a couple of days as its so gorgeous and chilled, or even for a week if you want a relaxing holiday. A barbie car is definately the way to sightsee the island!
Gorgeous scenery, great wildlife, beautiful beaches and sea, and a very chilled out atmosphere..
