Last stop Australia - Cairns......
Really sorry for the late blog guys, Im actually sat in New Zealand after just completing Fiji. Trying to catch up on my blogs now! I had such an awesome time in Cairn. Though it was pretty emotional leaving as we were quite settled, we had the boys their to comfort us (ben and curt) and we had just got use to the lifestyle. But hey good things come to an end! and they certainly did.
We had such a wicked 4 days in Cairns, felt like we really lived it up (hehe) on not alot of money at all. We stayed at such a cool hostel well i would prefer to call it a hotel. If you look at the photos on facebook i have just uploaded you will see what i mean. It was certainly in a different catagory completly to the standard of hostels we had stayed in throughout Australia. It had an enourmous pool, beach with a outside bar, inside bar and its own club. Surrounded with plasma screens, cool music and cheap deals on food and drinks. A backpackers paradise!! We fell in love with it!
Cairns itself is a pretty cool town with several streets of shops, but mainly all souvenir ones with cool bars and restaurants dotted along, and a lagoon. (Most cities in oz have lagoons!) We spent an afternoon here, it was dead chilled out overlooking the sea and quiet areas of cairns. Most of our time in Cairns if am honest was mainly partying and spending time with ben and curt as we knew it would be our last chance to do this for a while. Plus the trips which they had going on were far over our budget. We fancied scubing diving but the lads didnt seem to impressed with ti after they had achieved it. And we had already snorkled the Great Barrier Reef so we thought we would save the scuba for thailand! (thought i would like to definately come back to australia again and accomplish this as well as surfing!!)
Our first night at Gilligans was a 'Wet Tshirt Competition'. This was highly entertaining after several Vodka Raspberries. (Me and Sophie did not join in!) But some of the people that did were amusing - girl with fake, huge plastic boobs, tan-tastic with bleach white hair. Im sure you can picture this! We met some wicked people from holland this night and had a laugh with some of the broomy lads we travelled up the Coast with. Infact a couple who was travelling with them got engaged! Which made the celebrations even better. And... the 5 drinks for $10 went down very very well! Cheap!!!
Another night we spent in Cairns was Backpackers Big Night Out like in Surfers Paradise. However it was not half as good as surfers. It was a pub crawl round hostels rather than night clubs, and we never got any freebies ..and it was more expensive! But the night was a good laugh even though we were seriously ripped off for $20. Everybody's crazy dance moves came out, drinking games were going on, and the bunjee game was taking place - which basically involved being strapped up on a bunjee and you had to run down a mat and try bite a banana from inbetween some womans legs. However the rope only would stretch so far so it all depended on your strength. Ben did win the competition but they wouldnt give him his free Bunjee!
Our final night before leaving to Fiji, Me, Benj, curt and Soph had some drinks and farewell chats in the room before hitting the Bar downstairs. Free Champagne for ladies for an hour and a half. Me and Sophie were in our element!! Gilligans certainly know how to draw customers in, we didnt buy one drink this night and just tried to cram in as many glasses of champers in the space of an hour as quick as possible. We even got pink champagne! (pink cordial added - just sounds good) We had such a good farewell night with curt and ben, nina (girl from fraiser island) and some lads from london (who are with the broomy lads)
The night ended quite emotional as we said our farewells.... It was pretty sad to be leaving Ben and Curt as we had become so close over the 5 weeks. But it was a good end.
I would recommend Cairns to anyone travelling the East Coast, but ..... you must stay at Gilligans. It made our Stay!! Cairns wouldnt be as good without it. The entertainment, free food, cheap drinks, friendly staff and CLEAN rooms make your stay so rememberable!!
